Empire star Jussie Smollett, an openly gay man, was attacked by 2 men described as “white and wearing ski masks” around 2AM Tuesday morning (January 29) in what Chicago Police Department is calling a “possible hate crime.”

According to TMZ, Smollett had just arrived in Chicago from New York and was hungry so he went to a Subway to eat. As he was leaving for home, someone yelled at him, “Aren’t you that f***ot ‘Empire’ n*****?” The two men then reportedly came up to him and proceeded to beat him, fracturing his rib. Police said the attackers also “put a rope around his neck and poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim.” Police added that Smollett “self-transported to Northwestern Hospital and is in good condition.”

The unknown substance was bleach, says TMZ and the attackers were allegedly yelling as they fled from the scene, “This is MAGA country.”

Smollett received an outpouring of support from fans and colleagues on Twitter following the reports of his attack.

Jussie Smollett is a 35-year-old American actor, singer, and photographer best known for his role as Jamal Lyon, a gay character, in the FOX musical TV drama series titled Empire. He came out to Ellen DeGeneres in 2015 at The Ellen Show, saying that “there is without a doubt no closet, that there’s never been a closet.”

Chicago Police Department is asking anyone with information regarding the incident to call Area Central Detectives at 312-747-8382 or to report it anonymously to www.cpdtip.com.

All I can say is “What’s wrong with people” Why is there so much hate in this world? It really upsets me when I hear of hate crimes. It’s so wrong. People just need to respect each other’s differences. I’ve never really followed Empire or Jussie Smollett but it’s sad that it happened to him and best wishes go out to him. It doesn’t matter whether a person is gay, bi, or straight, black, white, or what nationality a person is. Were all human beings and each and every one deserves respect.

Y’all and this selective “outrage” in your “community” is comical

“it’s not what’s being said – but whose saying it” – “it’s not whose been victimized but the type of victim they victimized”

they find trans woman murdered on a daily it seems, & the same commentary y’all give on what they did or should not have done to get murdered is the same tone people have with “possible”

pick a side. you pick one another a part so superficially and selective choose :who: you will champion for based on their outward aesthetics and personality, I meant “masc” or “fem” –

hard to be a hate crime, when everyone hates each other- its all rooted in hate—stem on b***hes

    This is just sad….

How can such a talented actor and musician who is known all across the world become a victim to such an atrocity??

It really makes me wonder what will it take in order for a young gay black male to make it in this country?

Furthermore, to me there is honestly not enough talk that is being done to counter act these terrible ideals from these wanna-be homophobic and racist thugs.

People often forget that in America, gay black men often have it harder than most other stereotypes in this country. We have more hurdles to jump over in order to be viewed as successful.

We have to face racism, homophobia from our families, co-workers, classmates, and people within our social circle as well as our social environment and up, here it comes….the Church Almighty.

On top of that, the sexual preference for black men is usually almost always at the bottom which only makes us feel less of ourselves even if we have the best body in a 5-10 mile radius on grindr, scruff, jacked, Adam4Adam or any other one of these so called “dating” app sites.

Jussie Smollet is one of the few people in this country who alot of gay black men look up too especially as an “out” gay black man. He is a genuine role model. He is an American leader. He has a great aptitude for life and alot of love in his heart. His talent and beautiful voice is only a small snippet of what makes him great. He deserves justice for this horrible situation. Period.

But this kind of thing happens to gay black men all the time in this country. What can we do to stop such injustice? How do we face it especially when the gay community is breaking apart in front of our very eyes??

Hell, I have faced more racism from gay white and Hispanic men than I have from someone who may be identified as a typical Texas redneck and I know personally Im definitely not the only one.

What more do we have to prove to people that we are just human as everyone else? Please someone tell me….

Oh, that bothers me big time! I’ve always adored/loved the young man and his incredible talents. This is where the hetero-black and the gay-black community has to come together and join forces, survival. Some of us know what this is like, personally, so I really feel for him, this is why I’m so very “militant” as a black-gay male in this country, you need to be armed, physically, mentally, spiritually; I am, always…

This is an awful but still realistic aspect of what it is like if you are not a straight white man. I don’t believe that these horrible people are representative of the majority of our great country, but these bigots still exist. I don’t expect everyone to accept people who are not straight white males into their “club”, but we must all be accepted as individuals. Violence of any kind should not be acceptable as a form of expression or opinion. In addition, I find it equally disturbing that this was also racial targeting of a black male. I have heard these MAGA people tell blacks that this is more their country than blacks. If anyone ever decides to read a book they would realize blacks have been in this country for 400 years which is much longer than any other group except the First Nation people. Most of these MAGA european-based people didn’t come over until the great migration. Even our president’s family roots are not that deep in America, considering his paternal grandparents where from Germany and his mother was from Scotland. I feel that education is the beginning of getting rid of hateful speech and action. We are all citizens of this great country and deserve equal respect and consideration, no matter how long you been here or where you came from. Meanwhile, I hope law enforcement finds these criminals.

how is this considered a “possible” hate crime when it’s very clear they attacked him because of his race and sexual orientation? And for the people thinking maybe the media is making things up in terms of the attackers political affiliation, they did say “This is MAGA country.” The irony, only maga if you’re white and straight. I thought we were so against nazis and here we are with this foolishness.
