Watch This: Madonna’s Met Gala Performance

Couture wasn’t the only thing on display at this year’s Met Gala as the Queen of Pop, Madonna, treated the gala attendees to a performance of “Like A Prayer”, “Hallelujah”, and a brand new song reportedly titled either “Magic” or “Beautiful Game”.

The performance was mounted on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and began with Madonna descending the stepson the Met’s Great Hall garbed in a monastic cloak while being flanked by dancers dressed in religious habits.

Watch snippets of the performance as filmed by Vogue, as well as a recording of Donatella Versace’s livestreaming of the performance, below:

This year’s Met Gala theme, “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”, was a particularly great fit for the Material Girl, who has never been shy about using Catholic imagery and motifs in her work.

For instance, her music video for “Like A Prayer” involved burning crosses and an interracial kiss. The Roman Catholic Church even outright condemned the video. During 1990’s Blond Ambition Tour, two of her concerts in Italy were canceled because of protests regarding the Catholic imagery used in a number of segments. In 2006, Madonna sang “Live to Tell” while mock-crucified to a glittering disco, angering not just the Catholic Church, but the Church of England as well.

Before her performance, Madonna walked the Met Gala red carpet in a Jean Paul Gaultier gown, a black net veil, and a glittering, crucifix-adorned gown. Aside from Madonna, other celebrity standouts at the Met Gala were Rihanna, Zendaya, Chadwick Boseman, and Nicki Minaj.

Madonna’s last album was 2015’s Rebel Heart. Madonna’s reportedly been working on her 14th album, but there’s no word on whether the song she debuted at the Met Gala will be part of it.

She is soooo boring these days. Isn’t religious intolerance so 1990’s? Be nice, let it go. Pray to whatever you want. Shut up and sing.

oohhh to think back when Madge was actually relevant. It is a shame she can’t embrace what made her famous and conversely recognize that she is no longer relevant and that it is ok to be where she is.
