News: Man Denied Marriage License Files Candidacy / Who is David Ermold?

You might have heard about his story before since it caused quite an uproar.

In any case, the whole incident happened in 2015. A county town clerk for Rowan County, Kentucky named Kim Davis refused to issue same-sex marriage licenses following the US Supreme Court decision on June 26, 2015 to do so. Her refusal had landed her a five-day trip in jail.

Fast forward to today, one of the men whose marriage license application she denied has decided to run for her seat in 2018.

His name is David Ermold. He is reportedly an Assistant Professor of English at the University of Pikeville and is now married to his then fiancé David Moore. Originally from Philadelphia, Ermold “came to Kentucky 19 years ago to be with Moore.”

Ermold said in an interview that LGBT rights won’t be his focus alone and that his campaign is about unity. “People … are back home bickering and fighting with each other and fighting on social media.” He added, “This campaign we are putting together is about unity and bringing people together and restoring fairness.”

Naturally, Ermold’s decision to run has garnered attention on social media. Take a look at some of the netizen’s reactions below.

David, I wish you good luck with your campaign. Even if you don’t get elected, the fact that your running is making a bold statement for the gay community. Maybe someday everybody will be accepted as equal regardless of sexual orientation, race, nationality, age, looks, etc. Everybody is human and everybody has different interests and desires, but this crazy world is so prejudiced. I run into the same type of problem at times, as my best and loving boyfriend is black and I am white, and were both gay. We accept each other completely, but with our families it’s a different story. Good luck, and hope the election goes in your favor.

An interesting addition to that story is that Kim Davis herself processed his paperwork to run in the election. Their meeting was reported as being cordial. In the end, they shook hands and she said “may the best candidate win.” Since their last reported meeting, the State has altered the laws so that there is no longer only one signatory for certain documents. When there is a clash of protected beliefs, a person can step aside as their protected rights (in this case religious) require. It’s unfortunate that the State had not been progressive in its thinking sooner.
