Homophobia: The Ellen Show Silent on Kim Burrell

Update January 4th, 10 am: Ellen DeGeneres has said Kim Burrell will not appear on her show after the gospel singer made homophobic comments.

Before the rest of the world ushered in 2017, the previous year had one more surprise to spring on the LGBTQ community. Last week, video surfaced of gospel singer Kim Burrell telling a Houston church that homosexuals are “perverted” and will “die from it in 2017”.

The comment has naturally caused a ruckus among the LGBTQ community, who have now taken to tweeting at The Ellen Show to have it cancel the singer’s scheduled appearance on the talk show this Thursday. A change.org petition also asking for Burrell to be barred from the show has now amassed 4829 signatures when this piece was being written, less than 200 signatures shy of its goal of 5000.

Despite the clamor, neither The Ellen Show nor Ellen DeGeneres herself has released a statement on the matter. This could prove awkward come the episode, as Burrell is set to perform “Isee Victory” from the Hidden Figures soundtrack alongside Pharrell. The singer-songwriter has already spoken out on the controversy on his Twitter, saying that he condemns hate speech of any kind.

Other actors from Hidden Figures have also spoken out against Burrell. On Instagram, singer and Hidden Figures actress Janelle Monae posted a lengthy rebuke of Burrell’s comments, saying that she “unequivocally repudiate(s) ANY AND ALL hateful comments against the LGBTQ community.”

I shouldn’t even have to post this as you guys should already know where I stand but If you do not pls know I unequivocally repudiate ANY AND ALL hateful comments against the LGBTQ community. Actually I’m tired of that label. We all belong to the same community, a shared community called humanity. And today and tomorrow and the next day I will continue to stand with other like minded people who condemn any and all statements and actions that would seek to deny the basic humanity of our fellow brothers and sisters. We cannot sit Idly by nor will we speak silently when we are confronted with such violence against members of our community. I am personally beyond exhausted by the ignorance and bigotry living in some people. At times I want to punch and I want to slap a lot of people when I read and hear the shit that comes out their mouthes !!! I will rejoice when folks stop thinking they ARE GOD, Jesus’ assistant, picking and choosing what “sins” are acceptable in the Bible, and using the Bible as a whip! WE can’t afford anymore tearing down of our shared humanity. My advice: If your religion is causing you to spew out words of hate, judge, or look down on others because of who one loves then you need to change it. And fast. If the religion don’t make you are more loving or better person, ditch it. But what do I know. My hope is that we ALL go into this new year considering for one moment that we don’t have all the answers. My hope is that we become more understanding, less judgmental, more tolerate, and more patient with one another. Including me. HAPPY NEW YEAR. 🙏🏿❤

Burrell herself seems unfazed by the controversy, claiming in a Youtube video that the sermon was not intended for the LGBTQ community but for “church people”.

Please not my girl Kim Burrell! I know people say many things, sometimes out of context. But for her to say Homosexuals will Burn in 2017 is just a lot of Bullshit. What’s worse that she then would go perform on a show who’s host is Homosexual? I don’t think she should cancel her appearance, I want her to come on, and explain what she meant, and go from there. We all know that Homosexuality has been on Earth since before Biblical times, so if we are supposed to burn, well then there would be fires, all over the world, which would leave this earth pretty burned up.

Like it or not, to be truly tolerant we must accept the rights of others not to see the world as we see it and be OK with their freedom of expression. To get one’s Andrew Christians in a knot over this is silly. By LGBT people getting histrionic about this, this woman now has more attention than ever. Guess, what? All the uproar won’t change her beliefs.

Again people got their panties in a bunch. She has every right to say what she wants. And these fairies get all bent out of shape and offended. If you get offended you deserve to be offended. Blame your parents for raising a pussy. Get over it.

you must be her brother, you seem like you are a phobe as well. it only means you fear what you see in yourself. maybe you are little light in the loafers in the closet.

How will your rage in any way change this? It won’t, but you will ruin your own day being angry about something you cannot change. Not responding to her is a better revenge than responding with mock outrage that just makes a guy look stupid and dismissible.

A change.org petition for a tv show? a little bit much.

who is this bitch anyway? who cares about her crusty ass, old opinion. all the bible has to say about homosexuality is in the old testament; it has nothing to do with jesus’ words, frankly. i just looked this up, and she will not be on the ellen show. best not to publicize bigotry to begin with.

I never liked her!!! Always thought she had a supernasty attitude! Ghetto baboon Now she will get what she deserves!!! But chinup McDonald’s is always hiring lol!! Superdummy the entertainment industry is run by gays. Fool

Ghetto baboon…? Amazing that you criticize bigotry by spewing more of the same. I think her comments are revolting, but I know she doesn’t live in a ghetto. You should check your ghetto mentality and bigotry at the door of the hovel you inhabit. Don’t hate because she has a successful career and all you have is your insecurity and pathetic racism….

Good lord we are so thin skinned. I am so glad I was born with a back bone and the ability to not allow words to affect my life.

Like it … or not .. Kim Burrell has as much right to her beliefs on this topic as anyone else does. Under law, she may not discriminate when it come to housing, employment, etc., but she does not have to remain silent; she does not have to perform. While I do not agree with her position at all, I will stand behind her rights to hold it.

And I full well expect that comments which fall into the Scathing Liberal Hate category will follow, the very type of negative and divisive thought dragging the US down at present.

    Gospel Singer & Pastor
    Mrs Kim Burrell !
    You are dam HYPOCRITE!

In your sermon you blast the lifestyle of the gay community as perverted and how God will cause death to them all in 2017! And how your mentor Bishop Eddie Long will suffer as well!
Let me say this to False Profit in Sheep’s clothing !
You can & should teach the word of the good gospel as it is written but you can not exercise foul language in the pulpit & think this will save souls !
If these Punks are so discussing STOP using there talents for your own growth !

Tell peeps to “go to bed” !
No my sister we are WIDE AWAKE with red bull ! From Sunday Best on BET your behavior has always been judgmental & mean spirited ! The way you Doggs them poor kids ! I been lost respect for you !

You appeared on Missy Elliot Cd singing a song,on Frank Ocean Cd, he’s singing songs about the Love he has for another man, hosted several gospel concerts hosted by leaders in the LGTB Community , appeared on Atlanta Housewifes with Ms Derek doing your hair & Make up ! Just this month you appeared on Ellen Show!

You can’t have it both ways! If they are deplorable ; HEFIFER stop using them for your hair, make up & musical career ! We know the real truth! Your husband left you for another Man! Nor that’s TEA ! Facebook don’t be mislead by this crap

We have a President elect who bragged on how he Grab females by the PUSSY,
We have Cops killing our young black Mens ! We have youths who are beating each other like dogs on WORLDSTAR ! and your don’t find rage with that !

I will never forget the hateful cracker who killed all those church members and we were asked to for him! We are now told to give Donald Trump a chance! But these gay people should DIE IN 2017 ! This is the reason why the Black Church is dying ! Nasty ! & Hateful Leaders !

  9. LoveOneAnother

i am amazed that so so many black people are homophobic, after their plight you would think they would be more accepting and less judgemental. They tout their godliness but were not even christians when brought over to the US. any religion that preaches hate…… is not a good religion.

    • Sparz

It goes both ways, bigot. Gays are NOTORIOUS for being racist against black people. But the moment a person speaks out against gays or their precious, warped, lifestyle they want to get their pannies in a bunch. Fucking hypocrites.

The Ellen Show has cancelled Kim Burrell scheduled appearance on Thursday January 5 2017 as noted in Ellen’s tweet. The media including the gay media is as usual to quick to jump on a story before all the facts are given enough time to play out.

      • Bill

Dave, my point is this article should have soley mentioned Kim Burrell stance on gays and mentioned awaiting Ellen’s comments I/o posting Pharrell’s tweets and giving a negative impression on Ellen for not responding quick enough according to your article. I think in the scheme of things Ellen has done a lot more for humanity than the so called news media who can’t wait for the next negative or poorly written story to bring to our attention. Why not write a story line on the positives Ellen has contributed, dah?

  11. JW

Everyone has a right to voice their opinion. Every small minded comment does not deserve a response. The focus should be on larger issues and not on narrow minded people. What is more important, is that your now have a Republican controlled executive, legislative and judicial body, not to mention the same with governorships , whose impact can and WILL be much more damaging and wide ranging. to the LGBT community than any words from Ms Kim Burrell. You can rest assured that past political tolerance and support for all social issues, including gay rights issues will be dead in the water at least for the next four years and more realistically , far beyond that! Your focus/concern and comments should be there and not on insignificant Kim Burrell or Ellen Degeneres .

  12. Kalon

Instead of bashing the gay community saying they’re going to hell in 2017… She needs to focus on not eating so much fried chicken with her fat piggly wiggly ass which is more important. God doesn’t like hate at all. He loves everyone equally.

I”ve yet to figure out how all these “New Testament” kristians keep going back to the Old Testament for their ignorance when their leader said he was creating a New Testament of Love not Judgment. It seems they either missed the message or never really converted in the first place from their pagan idolatry.
