Beauty: First Male Spokesmodel for Maybelline Revealed

In a show of just how far the needle has moved when it comes to mainstream culture’s acceptance of alternative expressions of masculinity, cosmetics giant Maybelline has announced its first ever male spokesmodel: beauty vlogger Manny Gutierrez

Gutierrez is an online phenomenon, having amassed two million subscribers on Youtube and three million on his Instagram page. Maybelline has tapped him to star in its “The Boss Life” campaign to promote Big Shot Mascara.

Gutierrez was effusive about his new role, posting on Instagram that he “couldn’t be more honored thrilled!” and that he was looking forward to “working together so much more” with the cosmetics company.

Gutierrez, of course, is following in the footsteps of James Charles. Charles is a teenager whose yearbook photo went viral because of his makeup skills. Not only did he gain viral fame, he also was given a contract with iconic makeup brand CoverGirl. His Instagram followers ballooned even more, from 400,000 followers to more than a million as of this writing.

Get ready for glitters and smokey eyes boys! Yassssss!

I know there’s gonna be a lot of bitter naysayers even coming from the lbgtq community, but this is a huge step forward for further inclusiveness within the community always posting pictures of masculine muscled pretty much naked white men all the time.

Also, it’s about time make up companies include men, because plenty consume their products, so they might as well show there customer base.

Oh good. Once again the gay community is being represented to mainstream America by one of the “sensational” fringe members.

I couldn’t agree more. This kind of sensationalism just keeps our community segregated. Unfortunately, it will never end.

“… alternative expressions of masculinity/” Have seen interviews of both men. Seems that “alternative” means feminine in both cases. Current makeup practices make men look like women. How about makeup colors and techniques that enhance the looks of traditional males?

This is a damn man wanting to look like a woman. I am glad I am bi. If I want a woman I can be with a woman. I want a man I can be with a man. One thing that I don’t want is a man who thinks he is a woman. Never met one yet that was not crazy as hell. I would rather see real make up made for real men.

I dont think the needle of acceptance has moved much at all. Just take a look at our next President and those that came out and voted for the man.

this goes way beyond a man using a little mascara or some coverup , this is full on eyedrag with false lashes , not for me, good luck but can someone explain how this moves the gay community forward , this is so going to fail….. start using an older model and not the twinks then I’ll take a look

I don’t think this is an alternate expression of masculinity. Nothing masculine about it. This is an alternate expression of femininity…and no fan here

This is good news and bad news. The good news is this part of the LGBTQ community is given a public face. The bad news is this reinforce the “fag” and “queen” and “man in drag” stereotype. Apparently, Maybelline knows their consumer base and it must largely be men in drag. Otherwise, the “green” would control and “lavender” would be out, out, out like Lady MacBeth’s spot.

I like a man to look, talk and dress like a MAN. I don’t have time to wait on a man that has to put on makeup before we go out. He does paint up well and is pretty.
