Equality : Rainbows Surround Pence DC Home

As the inauguration for president-elect Donald Trump and vice-president-elect Mike Pence draw closer and closer, more and more people are finding creative ways to show their contempt for arguably one of most divisive people to ever assume power in the White House.

For instance, people living in the Chevy Chase neighborhood of Washington D.C. have taken to displaying rainbow Pride flags on their porches and lawns. Why? Because vice-president elect Mike Pence is currently renting a $6,000-a-month home in the neighborhood.

The flags started coming up on lawns and porches last Tuesday and was first noticed by ABC 7 reporter Suzanne Kennedy, who mentioned in a tweet that the flags were “a symbolic message”.These “protest” flags come only two weeks after Pence was booed by the audience in a staging of the Broadway hit “Hamilton”. The vice-president was also respectfully addressed by the cast of “Hamilton”, who asked him to “work on behalf of all of us”.

That the residents of Pence’s temporary home are against him should come as no surprise, as DC was one of the places were Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton bested Trump. That they are choosing to do their protesting with rainbow Pride flags comes from the many anti-LGBT stances that Pence has taken over the course of his political life.

Pence, for instance, is a believer of controversial conversion therapy. His policy against needle exchange programs and his slashing pf public health funding during his time as governor of Indiana also led to a massive HIV outbreak in his state.

Both Pence and Trump have also ran on a Republican platform that defines marriage as between one man and one woman”, and Trump’s transition team is headed by “traditional marriage” defender Ken Blackwell. Just like Pence, Blackwell believes in conversion therapy, and is also a member of anti-LGBTQ group Family Research Council.

How do you guys feel about this move by Mike Pence’s neighbors? Is this something you’d do? Share your thoughts in the comments section below!

People have the right to do as they choose. No matter how much Jill Stein wants the recount votes to elect Hillary Clinton, Mr. Trump and Mr. Pence are going to be our next leaders. Gov. Pence has proven to be a good governor of my state of Indiana. Even though Hoosiers may not all feel the same as myself, toward Gov. Pence, they have not shown their immaturity levels, either, by throwing rainbow colors everywhere. I also feel that the lack of respect shown toward our leaders, whomever they maybe, is one of the major things that is wrong with this country.

I completely agree with you Randy! The hypocrisy and disrespect for our leaders is clearly revealed and so anti-American. If people only realize and wake the f*ck up that so much waste of our American dream, which doesn’t exist due to people who are weak and vulnerable, the amount of $$$ bureaucratic waste and we paid for this???? How can people think this is ok? To hide evidence, to waste money? I am so grateful that we are going to have a leader that will get the job done!

If they want respect as leaders, they need to act as leaders. They do not care about us and I am proud of the people of this neighborhood for reminding him that he can’t ignore the fact that the LGBT community exists. If you want to blindly support someone who has complete and utter disregard for you and thinks your sexuality is a lifestyle that can be changed like a light switch, that’s your perogative, but they will need to earn respect just like anyone else, and their actions thus far do not bode well for them earning mine.

“Marriage” as stated by Obama and the Clintons as recently as 10 years ago, is between a man and a woman. It is all how we define it. It is something different than loving another person, and having sex, and receiving benefits. Also stop the dishonesty….the self righteous moralism of what is fundamentaly thoughtless and hip socialist ideology. Take the long view and grow up. We can all dissagree and still not make each other to be evil incarnate.

The decisions that people make have led to a massive outbreak of HIV in Indiana, not the Governor. I wonder how many cases of HIV have been contracted through contact by people meeting on this site. Probably much more than in the state of Indiana. I’m sure Mike Pence is at fault as well.

Did you send that message to all of President Obama’s detractors this past 8 years? This is mild compared to what he has had to contend with.

Grow the fuck up. Flags?? Really?? Who gives a rats ass about your silly ass fucking fag flags…??? Do you actually think that will do one fucking piece of good??? Other than perpetrate the stereotype a bit further, not a lot. I am gay – voted for Hillary…. we lost. Get over it. It ain’t the end of the world.
So, we’ve got work to do … Let’s get to it…. Flags and such crap is not the way to go. Live your life.
Again, get over it. Damn. Move on

Ah, but how can you respect people who are moral midgets with no respect for the truth? These are not people who deserve even a shred of respect–nor have they ever shown any: not for democracy or for the underlying precepts on which our great country was founded.

“immaturity levels”? #FragYou! I’m a #DADT era veteran who watched fellow ‘gay’ vets get dishonorably discharged for being ‘gay’. That just sums up my contempt for your horseshit! Reap what you sew! Sling shit and get it slung back!

“…arguably one of most divisive people to ever assume power in the White House.”

You must be talking about the POS Barry Soetoro, because Trump hasn’t assumed power in the WH yet. After nearly 8 years of “leadership” of this sorry pathetic buffoon, the country is more divided and polarized than I’ve ever seen in my lifetime. Barry is truly the Divider-in-Chief, Deceiver-in-Chief, and Dumbazz-in-Chief. Also, the epitome of affirmative action. Bill Cosby would’ve been a much better choice for first Black prez.

How pathetic, its a good thing that America marched against the tax on tea by the British (Boston Tea Party in case you did not know)otherwise we’d still be ruled by England. I applaud those people for proudly defending their gay rights and or support by displaying the rainbow colors/flag. Individuals like Pence and Blackwell are dangerous to America as they spread diversion and bigotry to our great nation the USA. Remember LGBTQ are Americans and deserve the same rights as all Americans under the constitution which separates this so called christian Pence bigot from state. Finaly respect is earned not taken for granted.

I doubt Pence or anyone not associated with gays even knows what the flag or colors even stand for so this display is probably moot to them , I know many people that said Huh when asked if they knew what a rainbow flag was or what the colors stood for lol

I feel that making a stance, voicing your opinion is good, as long as it is done peaceful and you don’t destroy others property or lives. Regardless of the new leader (s) the is and will be change and that is the one thing we all fear is CHANGE. I don’t fore see a change in the LGBT communities. More power to those who are taking the stand to show their colors and to be proud of them.

  12. Wayne

The LGBTQ community is trying to find it’s voice now, but were silent doing the election. We all knew the thoughts of Pence for decades. Why get scared now?

People do NOT have the right to “do as they choose” when what they do is so hurtful to do many people. Causing a rise in HIV infection due to cutting funding should be no government official’s right. There has been a rainbow flag in front of my home for years and I’m proud to have it there and proud of the people of DC who are standing against the incoming tyranny. Enjoy your closet Randy.

Pence’s policies did not lead to an increase of HIV in his state!! To suggest such is total ignorance!! The spread of HIV is mostly due to irresponsible behavior. Just read profiles on A4A. Unsafe sex and drug use is the most common cause of the spread of HIV. Of course it’s easier to blame the Republicans than to take responsibility for your own actions.

  15. TOPGUN

STOP THE COMMODITY OF SHOVING THE INTEREST OF HAVING A DESIRE TO BE WITH THE SAME SEX IN PEOPLES FACES!!!! PEOPLE REALLY DONT GIVE A SHIT ABOUT IT AND ITS TRULY A WASTE OF TIME AND EFFORT!!!! STOP YOUR CRYING, BE STRONG AND MOVE ON!! DONT BE A HYPOCRITE IN THIS BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY THAT WE SHOULD BE SO GREATFUL TO HAVE, WE HAVE EVERYTHING HERE, WOULD YOU RATHER LIVE IN THE MIDDLE EAST WHERE WOMEN, AND HOMOSEXUALS HAVE 0 RIGHTS????

    SERIOUSLY WAKE THE FUCK UP!!!!

I think it’s hysterical that we get all high and mighty about our right to get married when nearly every married gay couple or partnered couple opens their relationship and fucks around on their spouse or significant other. Then we have the nerve to scream about how losing the right to “get married”. We sure do get riled up about things when we take virtually no responsibility for our actions, whine and cry and blame everyone for everything and call them hateful and anti-gun because we get called out on our bullshit, and then bareback the whole city and try to blame a Governor for spreading HIV. I think the guy is a mess and has dangerous ideas about gay people, but we need to fix our own House before trying to burn down someone else’s.

The neighbors it seems are protesting in a respectful civil way. I applaud them unlike the cast of Hamilton. Many issues are complex and people have some responsibility to think things through thoroughly before speaking. This is especially true when they have attained the status of having a public pulpit. The chameleon like policy positions of Hillary and Obama suggest that they are only for these politicians current benefit and are therefore fluid. Wiki leaks of the emails of the DNC suggest as much. In that sense they are perhaps more dangerous to the LBGTQ community.
Ask the LBGTQ people of London, Amsterdam and many German cities how they reguard the future of their security under the policies of self described”progressive” governments. They might believe that their choice as with many adult decisions is not all or nothing but for better or worse.

I thing though LGBT has went maybe to far with the stars & strips rainbow flag because we pledge allegiance to the American flag and also there is no national anthem to the rainbow flag.

  19. Goldenloverinmym

I AM GAY but i don’t throw it in others faces. I dont like the fact that trump and pence got elected. I hope pence loves the support he gets in his neighbor hood lol i hope he grits his teeth like i do every time i hear trump open his ignorant mouth
