Music : R.I.P. David Bowie

David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. The artist’s hits include Let’s Dance, Changes, Space Oddity, Starman, Modern Love, Heroes, Under Pressure, Rebel Rebel and Life on Mars. He was also well known for creating his flamboyant alter ego Ziggy Stardust.

David Bowie turned pop in a new direction in 1972 with the introduction of his alter ego Ziggy Stardust. Glam rock was the starting point, but Ziggy was much more than an eyeliner-wearing maverick: he was a truly theatrical character that at once harked backed to pre-War European theatre while anticipating 1980s androgyny and today’s discussions around a transgender spectrum.

The singer, who had been living in New York in recent years, only released his latest album Blackstar on his birthday on Friday, 3 days ago.

Rest In Peace Mr. Bowie!

Dave

I was a teen in the 70s. It was a struggle dealing with my sexual identity. Gay men were mostly in the closet back then. When David Bowie came on the scene I was thrilled to know that I could identify with his flamboyant style. He, Liberace and Elton John made me realize it was OK to express myself and explore my gay feelings. RIP David Bowie. Thank you!!

A sad day. While I’ve never been a die hard fan of his music, in fact I’ve bought one of his albums, I certainly have enjoyed listening to it on the radio. I was born in 61′ so I grew up listening to the radio. His music was always his own, no one even tried to copy him, he was that original. He was never out of the news, he was just never always in the news. A true one of a kind. I’ll celebrate his life and mourn his passing. The world has truly lost a gifted man. Rest in peace Major Tom. May you always dance as if none is watching. RIP.

The best concert that I’ve ever seen was David Bowie when I was stationed in Germany in the early 80s. The concert was incredible and he did three encores.

The world has lost one of its greatest talents.
    Reston peas Ziggy Stardust

Sad news this morning to read of David Bowie passing, it is truly a sad day for all music lover around the world.

I was introduced to David Bowie music by his Aladdin Sane and Ziggy Stardust albums and the move the Man Who Fell to Earth. I had the pleasure to attend his “1984 Floor Show” which something I will always remember. The world has lost a great artiest and performer.

Rest in Peace David Bowie you’re music will live forever.

Damn what a perfomer, fantastic voice and his persona incredible.
Never heard anything about him battling that dreaded “C” word.
I guess he didn’t want it publicly known, you will be missed David Bowie.

He was another one of those fantastic performers, with average, almost boring, voices, like Madonna, Justin Timberlake, Mick Jagger,Bob Dylan, Beach Boys, Beatles, etc.

Shocking…he hid it so well. Someone I really looked up to for decades, and now he’s gone. Time waits for no man, and I’ve realized that fully for a long time now. The smartassed kiddies on here will learn their lesson too late, I’m sure.

There was a sneak-release review of Blackstar last week. After reading the review and pondering both his age and that 14 years had passed since the last recording I wondered if Bowie would soon depart us. I wish I’d been very wrong in my conjecture and that instead of an obituary we’d be reading a tour announcement.

Bowie was an immense and immersive talent who led art, fashion, music and marketing to new and different levels – levels that made outsiders and the forlorn feel there was a voice and culture that included them. There’s no replacement for him. He will be greatly missed.

David Bowie was a gift. A unique, talented individual who could cross straight/gay/bi barriers effortlessly. What did he understand that most people just don’t get?
