Entertainment : Gentleman Start Your Engines … RuPaul’s Drag Race Is Tonight!

Tonight marks the second episode of RuPauls Drag Race season 7! And I couldn’t be more excited. Yeah I know, how cliche, waiting for that perky intro song and listening to the shade and nagging queens. But I’ve got a secret! And she’s awesome!

That secret of course would be Miss Ginger Minj!

OrMJmZpQZf6R1I4G_K7F5rl5N34T1rhc0BTR8EVoVjhhWcc4FSOb6h4OI2vp_BuQXPiQV9m0nFnvPAQLkles-dGiDRW1Qa5ixI6QcfNK9CydlP0lr69mdxOPl0dbOqXlU91H-zU

The Glamour toad herself! Is a Florida Native and I’ve known Ginger and her husband for almost 10 years now. I didn’t watch ONE episode of that crap until I learned my dear friend was gonna be in the running this year, and I have to say I have a newfound appreciation for all the hard work that goes into that show!. Thanks to Amazon Prime I devoured 3 seasons and All Stars in less than a month! They even had Untucked, which was a strange experience I can do without when it’s random bitches I don’t know, but Ginger makes Untucked so elegant.

I’ll admit, I kinda hope she’s gonna be Dolores Jane Umbridge for Snatch Game, but I’m sure we’re gonna DIE at whatever amazing icon she chooses.

I had the utmost pleasure of having tickets to see Ginger’s production of the Rocky Horror Show here in Orlando this halloween. Of which Ginger directed and starred as Magenta in a VERY original take on the beloved stage cult musical.

Ginger Minj and yes, my mother… She’s a huge Rocky fan and an even bigger Ginger fan!

We here in Orlando have been very lucky, blessed even (to be a good Christian) to have a queen with the magnitude of talent that Ginger holds. Here in Orlando, Ginger is a household name of Hamburger Mary’s, not to mention the theatre scene having starred in major productions of Sweeny Todd as Ms. Lovitt, starring in TWO legs of a production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and so much more in and out of face. I hope the world is as ready for Ginger as much as we here on #TeamGinger are! Seems like The Soup, already has a taste for perfection!

I used to detest Drag Race, when our local bar had “Bear Nights” on Mondays I was always kinda irritated at the twink bartender for ignoring his clients and watching the show, but now I’m starting to get it (Not bad customer service, the show). And this is coming from someone who did drag here on the Space Coast and in Orlando for a few years.

To most, drag queens are just a normal fixture to the gay night life. We see them at all major events, like the jaded cheerleaders they are a good queen can be there to root you on with a birthday shot on stage, all while reading you like a childrens book. But as strange as it is to realize, Drag Queens are also people. The’re actors, dancers, singers, performers!

Classicly drag queens are a man in the costume/illusion of a woman that does this for entertainment value, not sexual kicks (that’s transvestites). And there are many different types of drag, the two most popular focus around entertainment value. Comedy, which focuses on the art of camp and performance. Pageant, which focuses on beauty and glamour. Between these two we’ve seen all the acts, seen them come in all shapes, weights and sizes and laughed at their latest victim they drag on stage at bars.

Now I know, drag race is frivolous, and seems like a waste of time, or a guilty pleasure but truly look at where we have come from and how far queens have evolved to be what they are?

So whether it’s enjoying Drag Race with a waving checkered flag on Monday nights, or cheering on your favorite queen at your local watering hole Drag is an important part of our culture and history and if you don’t like it I have this to say.

Shut your fucking hole and respect them and their craft!

Because children lets open the library for a second and pull out a history book.

We wouldn’t have the RIGHTS, we wouldn’t have THE VOICE, THE POWER to be who or what we are today WITHOUT Drag Queens. Had it not been for brave souls who wouldn’t allow the world who to love, let alone how to dress people like Slyvia Rivera we wouldn’t be who we are today. So lets not forget the most important T of them all in lgbT, and treat our brothers and sisters with the respect they deserve.

Slyvia Rivera: Hero of the Stonewall Riots

You can sit in an openly gay bar and ignoring drag queens all you want, but one didn’t ignore you, or the need of her community. So tip your performers and give them the hard earned respect they deserve. Trust me, it takes A LOT to march around a club all night in heels.

Look forward to seeing everyone and Ginger each week, and at the crowning as my dear friend becomes America’s Next Drag Superstar!

NEVER UNDERSTOOD WHY GAY MEN WOULD BE ATTRACTED TO IMITATION WOMEN….
I GUESS THAT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE OPEDIUS COMPLEX.

  2. Top Queen

That’s totally cool that no one is attracted to drag queens or understands them, but let us not forget, if it were not for these loud-mouth caricatures, then we would have never had the Stonewall Riots and we would not be as free, open, and liberated as we are today. These aren’t men wanting to be women, those are transsexuals. These are men who put on costumes and dresses for entertainment purposes only. The make a check, grab some tips, go home, and get back to their “manly” life (however that looks for them). Learn a little and educate yourself on the things that scare you or repulse you. You’d be surprised; some of the best queens make the hottest guys.

    @General Miles, @Joey, @Hunter0500, @RearDriver – guys, seriously?

First: where in this article was this big discussion you seem to be commenting on about men’s desire to have sex with drag queens? Oh right. THERE WASN’T. THAT’S NOT WHAT THIS WAS ABOUT.

Second: Why did you get that from the article and react so vehemently against it? Oh right. You have your own issues about your own masculinity and sexual identity that you haven’t dealt with, so the only weapons you have in your obviously poorly educated arsenals are words based in fear, hate and shame.

Third: I’ll bet every single drag queen on every single season of Ru Paul’s Drag Race could form better sentences than you guys just did. Probably because they stayed in school.

So go back to school, haters. You’ve got a lot to learn about drag queens, society, and yourselves.

    (Snap assumed!)

No drag queens are not attractive to me at all. However, I was taken to a local gay bar and there was a show going on. While it was very new to me at the time and I still don’t understand why gay men are attracted to men in tights, I have to admit the show was entertaining. I guess that is what the shows are about not sex.

Top Queen you are right. It is the loud mouths that help us move forward in society. I just hope they all were not Queens.

    Respectfully to all.

  5. Hunter0500

@Joe. Thanks for the lesson on the importance of tolerance and acceptance of diverse preferences and thoughts.

  6. jace

ti takes ball to that that and look good that to those guys wholeave negative comnts yyou would have the free dosnes you have ifbakc the day and now the queens would not have stood up and said werte not goingto this any more and aas for making folls o them swelfs there not there baing very rreal more rreal them=n some of you guys aclty are tis really sad that people acocate drag wich baing lesws macine when incat tis atare most guys cant oull off well

  7. Brad

Actually the only thing anyone needs to learn about society is that shows like this make us all look bad. This kind of crap is what people stereotype is in to being.

Waste of intellect to create this mess. Use your time in more useful ways.

This is not entertainment for the intelligent person. It is entertainment for children.

  8. ohgeezreally

Ok “boys”get a grip. First of all, drag is no more about being an imitation woman than actors being imitation people. It’s an art form that dates back hundreds of years(from Shakespeare to Japanese Noh Theatre)so let’s get that out of the way. Secondly, Drag artists are responsible for what kick started the rights that we are able to enjoy now. The Stonewall Riots were started because one drag queen(Marsha P. Johnson)stood up to the police when all of the “proper”gays were ready to just step in line and be harassed and embarrassed(or even assaulted)by the “authorities”.

RPDR is a reality show based around these performers who are both revered and reviled by our ever divisive “community” and its interesting to note who is doing the reviling. Before you attempt to shame a performer for doing what they were meant to do, look at yourself. Are you doing anything to inspire, lead and take the brunt of insults so that others can be as brave or are you taking comfort in how well you play act being hetero, inspiring no one?

  9. Newly Gay

I know the first queen who was eliminated…Tempest DuJour. She is one hell of a queen and an amazing man outside of drag! These queens have a lot in there lives and this is a way for them to express appreciation towards women and perform a role! I never watched the race till Tempest was on there and now I am hooked! Go all you queens!!

  10. Ken

Drag queens are amazing! I’m not into the drag queen scene myself, but i respect everything they are about. I think the above people are talking about transexuals, unless you are bisexual I doubt you will find them to be a turn on. Drag queens are more entertainment and fun. Such creative people though! it’s sad that there is a lot of misconception around them. Some conform to the gender binary out of performance and some don’t. Either way what’s the big deal.

  11. joey

Joe, it is our right to say what is our mind here, and I believe it was expressed, take it as it is, no harm done. And I beg to differ with the writer here that mentioned drag queens are str8t men dressing for entertainment only, I have been around for some years now and have known and met enough of the drag queens around to know that the majority of them are gay men. Maybe whatever articles the writer was mentioning of here needs to quit reading aritcles and go out and experience what is out there in the gay community.

  12. pharade

First I would like to say, I admire and respect drag queens. They are awesome to be around and hang out with. I have gone to a couple of shows and loved each one. The next time I go to one, my mother wants to go with me.

You have my utmost respect for everything you do. Those that are getting their underwear tied up in knots, get over it!

  13. BloggerBear

    @Joey

That is NOT what I wrote or implied.

“Classicly drag queens are a man in the costume/illusion of a woman that does this for entertainment value, not sexual kicks (that’s transvestites).”

I wrote that MEN, do it for entertainment value.

Katya, who was almost eliminated on tonight’s episode is infact a BISEXUAL man who dresses in drag for BOTH entertainment AND sexual prostitution. But he still does this as a Katya, a character.

There is no sexuality to drag, drag is an art and a character.

When a man dresses in womens clothes strictly as a fetish there are other protocols and society provided labels.

    See older blog article.

As for everyone else, keep up the good conversation! I appreciate all view points as does Adam4Adam. Hence why we get along so well!

@Joey – Of course the drag queens mentioned are gay men. Nobody said they weren’t! (Though I’m sure there are a few ‘str8’ ones scattered about – maybe next season on Ru?

  15. dean

according to the dictionary if your gay you attracted to same sex ummmmm so how does that work never did understand however had a great friend that did it and raised a ton of money for charity and great respect was given to each his and well her own just remember just don’t “fuck it up” hehhehehehehehe

  16. Top Queen

To everyone who is so adamant about not liking drag queens, do you know if every guy that you slept with is a pure man? Have you ever slept with a drag queen before? Have they lived the life so well that you can’t tell the difference between the man during the day, and the woman at night? This is something I want you want to take in. As a drag queen, I get as much sex as I need; however it is a man not a woman. I know a few guys who put on a little make up for the gentleman who like cross dressers. But, I am a top, I eat ass, I fuck ass, I cum in the ass. But due to your narrowmindedness and hypermasculinity, you would never know the difference. Because I’m as dominant in the bed as I am on stage (Like many Texas Queens). So I hope I continue to bring such great shame to the community. It’s paying my side bills, while my college degree is paying everything else. 😉

  17. WALTER

I think the issue is this. When you hear or think of the world gay, you get this picture that every gay man does drag or wants to be a woman, when that’s not true.. Plenty of you men write in your comments and profile you don’t want to be called some kind gay labels (Twinkie, bear, cub, master, and so on) and feel offended that you are put or grouped all together as one category. Part of the gay community is drag though I do not do drag or date any who does drag, I watch them for the entertainment factor. I myself hate to be put into some kind of gay sub category that isn’t me… I know who I am and no label defines me, I define me, not you.. That’s how I change people’s perspective of what gay is… All I do is show them that being gay is just a man who likes & sleeps with men and the rest is an aspect of the gay community..

I have been a viewer and fan of Drag Race since season 2 and its a very enlightening show. I enjoy seeing how much work goes into the art of drag, seeing how each Queen interact with each other and most of all their struggles.
I get it, drag may not be your cup of tea but I’m sure we all have certain qualities about ourselves that is not everyone’s cup of tea. That doesn’t mean for it to be dismissed or thought less of.
I’m not a drag queen and I have never thought of doing drag but I happen to find myself relating to these men and their stories.

  19. Pharade

@Randy and those that feel Drag Queens are an embarrassment to the community, you are way off base there. If it wasn’t for the Drag Queens, we wouldn’t be where we are today. It is people like you who are an embarrassment. When I first encountered a Drag Queen, I didn’t know what to think. They are very talented in what they do.

  20. jack

This article was not about being attracted yo drag queens. At all. What is wrong with our community is How priviledged we think we are. When you have the courage to put yourself out there like a d queen then you can make comment. Hopefully by that time you will have discovered some shred of decency for OUR people.

  21. Chero753

I hear ya David French, the red head is HOT!! But ALL the pit crew is HOT!! I respect the drag queens. They are talented. I am a BIG fan of RuPaul’s Drag Race. After a long Monday at work, this is my treat. RuPaul does A LOT for these guys. THIS IS ENTERTAINMENT AND THESE DRAG QUEENS ARE FIERCE!!!!
