News: Over 50 Dead, 400 Wounded at Las Vegas Shooting

Photo Credits: Screengrab from CBS SF Bay Area YouTube

It was the last day of the three-day outdoor country music event called Route 91 Harvest Festival. Reports said singer Jason Aldean was onstage performing outside the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas around 10:08 PM Sunday when an unknown gunman opened fire at a crowd of thousands of people. The latest shooting incident, now being called the Las Vegas Strip massacre, left over 50 people dead and over 406 wounded. It is now considered as one of the deadliest shooting in the history of United States.

Take a look at another video below that was taken a few moments after the shooting. Please note that it contains sensitive contents.

Respondents from the Las Vegas Police Department are believed to have engaged and killed the lone suspect of the shooting, 64-year-old Stephen Paddock. The Nevada local was on the 32nd floor of Mandalay Bay hotel when he perpetrated the attack.

As of this writing, Paddock’s motive remained unclear but CNN quoted a “US official with knowledge of the case” saying that, “the Las Vegas Strip massacre has no known link to overseas terrorism or terror groups.”

Our thoughts and love are with the victims and their bereaved family and friends during these difficult times and also with our thousands of users in Vegas area.

it is completely obvious that there is no place for automatic weapons in a free democracy that prides itself on the “pursuit of happiness”. the NRA must take responsibility for its part in this horrific tragedy. and we must mourn the dead and pray for the injured and their families.

People kill, not guns. Even if all guns were banned, individuals like this shooter would find alternate means of causing chaos and the destruction of human life.

          • Mike

Lol! Okay, how many mass murder attacks have been carried out in the past couple years using no guns? SEVERAL. They use cars, trucks, knives, bomb, whatever they have. Banning guns will not stop these people except in your own little sunshine and gumdrops world.

          • Dave

            lol…
Gun homicides are a common cause of death in the United States, killing about as many people as car crashes (not counting van, truck, motorcycle or bus accidents). Some cases command our attention more than others, of course. Counting mass shootings that make headlines and the thousands of Americans murdered one or a few at a time, gunshot homicides totaled 8,124 in 2014, according to the F.B.I. In the United States, the death rate from gun homicides is about 31 per million people — the equivalent of 27 people shot dead every day of the year. Need more information?

Steve, do you really believe that taking guns away from law-abiding citizens will magically take them away from criminals and terrorists? The shooter had a LONG record with the law. He does not represent lawful gun owners. He does not represent the NRA. Do atheists pray?

When the people that are in the position to reform gun issues are some of the same people PROFITING from guns I wouldnt hold my breath. Wonderful U-S of A, bottom dollar > change

I know right? We need more than prayers, we do need better gun control! Sad to see now Las Vegas as an easy target in the open…

        • Matt

How will gun control keep them out of the hands of criminals without negating the constitutional right to have one by lawful people?

    • Shoot cum not bullets

And you’re an “ammosexual” gun lust nut. /satirical, in-kind response.

If we can’t control the psycho’s actions, perhaps we should limit their access to weapons… but by current accounts Mr Paddock exhibited no signs of mental instability, exhibited no extreme political or social views – IOW, there was no reason to deny him access to as many legal weapons as he desired. And remember that the NRA successfully lobbied to keep mental instability a reason for denying purchase or possession of firearms so it’s mostly moot.

Perhaps routine & general access is an “elephant in the room” issue?

As a progressive, gay man who owns firearms (and don’t ask me to do gun/sex/play), I see no other options for discussion. Of what “well regulated militia” was Mr. Paddock a part?

Arrg. I wish we could edit our posts or have a “preview” mode. Dave?

Last sentence of the first paragraph should read: “And remember that the NRA successfully lobbied to *prevent* mental instability *being* a reason for denying…”

    • Matt

Exactly. How do they equate lawful gun ownership with acts of terrorism? The news is reporting that ISIS has claimed the act.

*Cue a month of outrage and anger then month 3 ppl just start forgetting about something they were so passionate on when the next story of the month comes along. Happens everytime, another reason why nothing has been changed

What a terrible event. I hope the victims families have justice and and find peace. The war on drugs and unregulated Weapons Is one of those battles that remain. People advocate for nations as a whole to solve the problem, and other governments prefer isolation. Domestically it has been argued for a stronger central government, others want the states to decide what policy should be implemented, and others think a local community can make change on their own. All of them have their disadvantages. What we need is a different society modal where the brightest of our global citizens can determine the culture, government, and moral of a nation. Sometimes industry can have unprecedented effects on society. Events such as the industrial military complex, cyber space, and Pharmaceutical/ Street Drugs.
There are different types of societies but they involve the mobilization of the masses which can be a difficult and a time consuming task. Making changes in the law or government structure to enforce a transition of government has a lot of times fail. change is difficult here on planet earth. To hypothesize that a self sustaining global government that promotes self sustainability, technological and architectural advances that emphasize on renewable energy would be a culture shock for many. Many will also say that such utopia is defies our nature. However, we still have time to evolve and hope that our specie finds a way to live without the wars that our present homosapiens can’t resolve so easily.
Again the suffering of our human history has shown that change is gradual. I really hope the locals, states, domestic government and the international community views what happened in Las Vegas as a wake up call to implement better security strategies. The history of weapons shows not only successes and failures of governing entities but it has had unilateral and collateral damage to the lives of our loved ones.

I’m actually am a NRA member, and I believe in the right to protect myself, but I totally disagree with the NRA when it comes to ownership of fully automatic weapons.

  4. BJ

Very tragic situation indeed. It’s just very hard to understand what goes through a persons mind to do something awful like this.

  5. Sweetp

There is no reason to believe that an automatic weapons were even used. The located the store he legally purchased the guns from and they dont sell Automatic weapons. BTW, he passed the background checks, so much for that.

    • mike

The weapons were modified to fully automatic – which is child’s play to do. Maybe they should make that illegal.. Oh wait, it already is. So is murder.

  6. Walt

Automatic weapons are already illegal…. It ain’t the fucking guns, y’all. It’s evil and craziness that is the problem. There are thousands of gun laws on the books. So… would it be better if a nut job used a big truck to mow down a bunch of people ( which has already been done, ya know)… ??
Do I have a legal gun? Yes. Three.
Had them for years…. never killed one ( yet). I’d hate to use it, but I would if needed.
Remember all the way to last week… the shooter at a church that was stopped before he could kill more… by…. gasp…. someone with a concealed carry permit.
Don’t let raw emotions use up all of your brains. It’s evil that is the root cause.
    There. Have at it.
I’m 50 y/o and I will look after myself and my family as long as I can.

From 1994 to 2004 there was a federal assaults weapons ban. Since then, the ability to renew the ban has failed several times. Fully automatic weapons are basically banned, but semi-automatic weapons such as the ones used in this killings are basically not banned. What purpose does your average American need with a semi-automatic weapon. I believe we have the right to bare arms. You should have the right to have a rifle and hand gun, after you have passed mandated guidelines for ownership. We expect people to get a permit to drive a car and we know that can be a deadly weapon also. But what is the purpose of a regular citizen needing semi-automatic weapons? There isn’t one. It is time to use common sense to prevent these senseless deaths. Citizens don’t need these type of weapons. We aren’t going to stop some crazy person from shooting someone, but it won’t be a mass killing like what has been happening now. It is time for this craziness to stop.
