Moonlight added yet another feather to its cap as the film won Best Kiss at the revamped MTV Movie and TV Awards.
The film’s young stars, Ashton Sanders and Jharrel Jerome, were up against Beauty and the Beast’s Emma Watson and Dan Stevens, and La La Land’s Emma stone and Ryan Gosling. Despite going up against more established stars, the couple romantic beachside moment won out in the end.
In his acceptance speech, Sanders said that the win was “bigger” than him and his co-star. He remarked, “This represents more than a kiss. This is for those that feel like the others, the misfits. This represents us.”
Jerome agreed, adding that the award was also for “minority performers, to step out of the box…. This award is for that. It’s for artists who need to step out of the box and do whatever it takes to tell a story and whatever it takes to make a change, to get people to wake up.”
Moonlight wasn’t the only piece of LGBT entertainment to win at the MTV Movie and TV Awards. RuPaul’s Drag Race won for Best Reality Competition, while This Is Us won for Tearjerker.
Other winners include Emma Watson for Best Actor in a Movie, Millie Bobbie Brown for Best Actor in a Show, Trevor Noah for Best Host, and Beauty and the Beast and Stranger Things for Best Movie and Best Show respectively.

That’s good that they won and I dont wanna be a party pooper or rain on anyone’s parade but the kiss wasn’t anything much and I was surprised that they won, it seems as if they won because its a black flim and they are gay. And before anyone comes at me I am black myself, it seems like the gay community is really pushing for alot head way, and to be honest I heard the hype about the movie and when I looked at it it was boring to me, I looked it out and understood the message but it didn’t do it for me.
Seriously, I can’t believe there’s a
” BEST KISS AWARD”, in a Movie- TV Show.
What an Utterly ridiculous category.
Andrew, you are probably right that Moonlight won because it is a black film, which makes it the first mainstream Hollywood film to depict a kiss between two African American, gay men. That makes it worthy of recognition and praise for very different reasons than what usually wins in this category. Those of us who have seen and done thousands of black man on black man kisses will not have the same reaction but for those who live in the bubble where they have never seen or thought about it… It’ll be like …. I don’t know what. Let one of them tell you.
Leo, as with plenty of the categories of the MTVMTV Movie Awards, it is meant to be stupid, funny and purposely ridiculous!!! It’s not meant to be the Academy Awards but largely a spoof of the “serious awards shows. Get it? If not you should first get a sense of humor.
