Sports: Out Divers Make History at NCAA

Tom Daley is the name that usually comes to mind when you mention gay divers. However, that may soon change. In a historic turn, five out LGBTQ divers competed at the recently held NCAA Zone A Championships. This is believed to be the largest group of out divers to ever compete at the event.

The divers who participated in the championship held in Christiansburg, Virginia were Old Dominion junior Cory Moreno, Drexel freshman Anthony Musciano, West Virginia junior Alex Obendorf, and Harvard junior David Pfeifer. One of the divers requested not to be named.

The NCAA Zone A Championship spans Virginia to Maine, and was one of five meets held at the time. With 40 men’s divers competing in the championship, this makes the five participating gay divers 10 percent of the competitors, according to Outsports.

In an interview with Outsports, Moreno remarked that it was “cool” to have so many out gay athletes at the meet, but it was not the first thing he focused on.

“We are all here focusing on diving and just trying to do a good job,” he said.

Outsports also revealed that this was the first time that Musciano has spoken publicly about being gay, even if he had  been out to friends and family since his freshman year of high school. Musciano is also thought to be the first Drexel athlete to be out as LGBTQ.

OK. I don’t usually comment but this just caught me in the right mood. I’m a closeted married man who is sexually attracted to men. Happily married to a woman, but had I been born a few decades later, perhaps things would have been different. I have never been one for labels, but sitting in the side lines I find it ridiculous how the “gay community” pushes for equality; that they been seen no different than anyone else, yet everything you read talks about them as their separate sect. Truthfully, I believe it is the gay community which stands in the way of equality.

Then the recent article about Zac Efron in drag. It was a movie for crying out loud. No other statement. I’ve seen people dress up as the Easter Bunny but I don’t believe there was any bunny fetish being public displayed.

Really? Gay, straight, bi, lesbian, transgender, black, white, american indian, eskimo … all just people.

    Whew, I feel better.

“…he had been out to friends and family since his freshman year of high school..”

But somehow he didn’t ever feel a need for the Big Reveal to the LGBTQ “Community”. He didn’t feel like he needed the “LGBTQ Card”.
