Movie : Disney Teases “Gay” Moment in Beauty and the Beast

If the fanart available online is any indication, at least once in our life we’ve fantasized about a Disney Prince. But an actual Disney Prince – or Disney character, for that matter — returning any same-sex affection has never been a possibility, at least until now.

Bill Condon, director of Disney’s live action adaptation of “Beauty and the Beast”, revealed on the April issue of Attitude magazine that there will be an “exclusively gay moment” in the film involving the character LeFou, played by Josh Gad.

Condon says that LeFou “is somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston and on another day wants to kiss Gaston.”

“He’s confused about what he wants. It’s somebody who’s just realizing that he has these feelings. And Josh makes something really subtle and delicious out of it” Condon continues. “And that’s what has its pay-off at the end, which I don’t want to give away. But it is a nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie.”

This “exclusively gay moment” would be a first for Disney, as same-sex attraction has not been overtly depicted in its movies, especially the ones geared towards a younger audience. While far from being a Disney Prince, perhaps making LeFou a gay character can open doors for better LGBTQ representation in the future.

What do you guys think? Are you looking forward to this “exclusively gay moment”? And just for fun, which Disney Prince have you always found really attractive? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below!

It’s great that Disney is sticking it’s toe in LGBTQ waters.

But their doing so with a character whose name translates from French to English as fool or jester, as well as mad or crazy is a grand moment?

fucking REALLY Disney is for kids last time i watched anything disney was when i was baby sitting my 2 nephews, to get them down for their nap i put a cd in and all 3 of us were sawing logs in 10 min. The dumbing down of the world continues thanks to the simpsons and that type of animated shit

Since Beauty and The Beast targets audiences of young children, I disagree with Disney having a moment in this film.
Let children be children, and the parents discuss sexuality when they deem it’s time to discuss with their children.

Seriously? The third song I the original movie is “Gaston” It’s Lefou’s LOVE SONG” How does anyone NOT know Lefou is gay? Goober being gay (DreamWorks HTTYD2) is more if a surprise and that was no secret. Lefou being Gay? Honey, Blind aliens in space could see that. And a spineless doormat closet queen doesn’t scream “pride” or make me feel grateful. Lefou couldn’t be more gay if he was “Just Jack”

I can honestly say I have never fantasized about being or being with a Disney character, not even Peter Pan…and I love roleplay as much as the next person. I am not going to go see a movie I have no interest in because it has what probably will amount to what will be a portrayal of a gay stereotype. I don’t flock to theaters or the into TV shows just because the feature a GLBT character. I have to want to see the show in the first place.

Disney has been supportive of LGBT people for years, including special days at their theme parks. Deserve some credit given its a public traded company and the image it has to preserve.

Any wait for the straight outrage and bigots threatening to #BoycottDisney like they did for the latest Star Trek movie. Then can’t wait for them to “rationalize” their hatred saying that the original didn’t have gay characters, it’s a “liberal and/or gay agenda” to turn their children gay and Disney has become too “PC.”

It’s nice that Disney’s starting to get on board with the LGBTQ community, but can’t help but think that it’s purely a business decision, because as a corporation, Disney also loves them $$$. Gets us red-shirters to their parks at the end of June. (Yeah, I know it sounds jaded, but do you really believe that it’s being done out of the kindness of their hearts? I didn’t think so, either.)

I don’t believe Disney will fare well with this gay moment. A lot of parents will be turned off by the idea. It is not for Disney to either condone or encourage this in children’s movies. Leave the political stuff to politics.

Being gay is the way we are wired, we’re not trying to chance anybody’s sexual orientation. What thing I can say about the character, he should’ve been way better looking! Just saying!

Disney has always had subtextual, almost subliminal gay content in its animation. it’s there if you’re looking for it, and the stories still work if you’re oblivious to such things.

Disney has always been about making money, and recognizing changes in audience attitudes is part of that. among my niece’s peers, having a gay uncle is a badge of pride, a way to show tween superiority.

I doubt seriously that any ‘controversy ‘ about a stock character archetype will affect the film’s box office.

seriously, guys, read The Celluloid Closet.
