Grooming : How Rudy’s Barbershop is Creating a Difference

This barbershop is making a difference in its own small way. How? By providing showers and shower essentials to LGBTQ homeless youth through their Get Clean for a Good Cause campaign with the It Gets Better Project, an organization that aims to create, inspire changes, and show to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth that it will get better for them.

Founded in 1993 by three friends David Petersen, Wade Weigel, and Alex Calderwood (deceased), Rudy’s Barbershop started with one branch at Seattle’s Capitol Hill with a vision to provide “a new approach on a traditional service.” But more than the quality cuts and superior products Rudy’s offer for everybody is the vision to become a community that everybody can count on.

Over 25 years later Rudy’s Barbershop continues to make good of its promise through its latest drive with the It Gets Better Project. Today, every time a customer purchases any of Rudy’s latest 1-2-3 Showering System Rudy’s has pledged to “donate a week’s worth of the same product to a shelter that serves LGBTQ youth so that everybody can feel their best.” The campaign will last for 90 days and customers wanting to participate can get it online, in stores, and in Ace Hotels.

According to Brian Wenke, the executive director of the It Gets Better Project, 40 percent of homeless youth identifies as LGBTQ. He further added that, “When considering the complexity of the issue, it is easy to lose sight of the small day-to-day essentials that can have a big impact on someone’s life—like access to personal-care products.”

Very well said, for when one is homeless and hungry, showering is the furthest thing from their mind. Don’t you think so? Share with us your thoughts in the comments section below.

So I am all about helping out the homeless and the youth. And I think it is a great think that they are doing. But their products are very expensive for the really small packages. I have worked in hair salons for a long time and when you bundle products together they should be a discount price from being sold separate. The 1-2-3 bundle is the same price as if you bought it all single. And $60 dollars for shampoo conditioner and body wash. Must be some dang good products. Wonder if you can just donate to them without buying and product. Like I said I think they are doing something great.

Bravo Rudy’s!! Was a client for year’s when I lived in Seattle…great haircuts and fun hip shops! The thought of serving the LGBT homeless…AMAZING!!! Little things like this goes a long way to help those who are homeless feel that their life matters, that someone cares and perhaps gives them hope for a better tomorrow!! Not to mention makes them feel they can look good to go find jobs, go to school or just pave a better life for themselves somehow!! Hope more gay owned businesses start giving back to the community that supports them and made them big (listening underwear guy???)

um why not just provide this charity to all homeless, and not bother worrying about who they prefer to sleep with, its time to dismiss your soft bigotry.
