Gay Rights : Will Marriage Equality Under Trump Be Safe?

In what looks to be a turnaround for the current American president-elect, Donald Trump has revealed in a recent interview with CBS’ Lesley Stahl that the issue of marriage equality is already “settled” and “done”.

Without elaborating on his own feelings on same-sex marriage, Trump said that these issues have already gone to the Supreme Court and have been settled there, and that he is fine with the decision of the highest court of the land.

However, Trump hasn’t walked back earlier statements made on the campaign trail and to outfits like Fox News that he would be appointing Supreme Court judges that would look to overturn the marriage equality ruling. He has already said during the second presidential debate that he had plans to install a judge “in the mold of” Antonin Scalia to the Supreme Court. Scalia, of course, was well-known for his anti-LGBTQ record while on the bench.

Trump’s team is also made up of people known to work against the LGBTQ agenda. His vice-president, Mike Pence, is a believer in conversion therapy, and signed Indiana’s controversial Religious Freedom Law. The head of Trump’s domestic transition team is also known “traditional marriage” defender Ken Blackwell. Just like Pence, Blackwell believes in conversion therapy, and is also a member of anti-LGBTQ group Family Research Council.

Aside from marriage equality, Roe v Wade will probably also come under attack should Trump get his way with the Supreme Court. Trump acknowledged this during the interview with Stahl, saying that women looking for an abortion will “have to go another state.”

Trump was also pressed on the growing number of his supporters perpetuating racist and bigoted attacks against Muslims, Latinos, and LGBTQ communities. Trump did not deny that these incidents were happening, and instead call on his supporters to “Stop it.”

Do you feel secure with Trump’s declaration that marriage equality is already “settled” and “done”? How do you think social justice gains made during the Obama administration will fare with Trump’s possible Supreme Court nominations? Share your thoughts and comments with us in the section below!

Yes I do. Trump will be a president for all people. Trump is definitely better than Hillary. She accepted millions of dollars from countries that kill gays.

Frump has completely done a 180 on Marriage Equality since the campaign. On the stump, he said, “Gay marriage? GET RID OF IT….I WILL GET RID OF IT!” Sunday on “60 Minutes?” “It’s law….and I’m good with that.” You cannot trust a WORD this flim-flam artist says….he’s a carnival barket with many mental disabilities. The GOP, I’m thinking, will fulfill Prof. Lichtmann’s prediction and will impeach him as soon as the church nutters start getting pissed off about his “walkbacks” on gay marriage, and now, Planned Parenthood, and his statement that the Clitnons are “good people.” I’ve already stated that I’ve yanked my political support for the LGBTQIwhatthefuckever community of today; looking at the posts just on here and nall over FB, it’s pretty obvious that the exit polling that found out that around 35-40% of gay males voted for Trump may indeed be correct. A demographic with that amount of stupidity doesn’t deserve my support anymore. Disgusting, but you brought it upon yourselves.

Trump has softened his stances because he’s trying to pull this divided country back together. He wants to be the president of all Americans, unlike president Obama. I personally think he cares much more about other issues than gay marriage or transgender bathrooms or whatever. I think we owe it to him to give him a chance and see what kind of president he will be.

      • 55btmguy

I voted for president Trump because of his stance on safer boarders, economy and actually helping veterans which is big to me because the gov’t has taken away so many benefits that we have been protecting so this country can be free to choose and as for gay marriages I do believe this is a done deal.
President Trump has a very hard road ahead of him but he is trying with just 2 weeks in office he has done more then the last 3 presidents did in all their time in office which is driving democrats and liberals as well as the main stream media totally nuts because they can’t keep up… even without his full cabinet

These uneducated gays disgust me, voting for the lowest of low. They are forgetting because of Hilary most of their welfare kids have CHIP, and most gays were able to get meds. Here they are not voting for a decent individual, but a hating degenerate like Trump and his team. I agree w your comment.

  3. Shawneboi

HELL NO!!! This man is a pathological liar and NOTHING he says I would believe. Add Pence into the mix and his merry band of anti gay crusaders…Amerca’s LBGT community is their target number 1. It is beyond belief that in 21st century America we have been sent back to 1950’s. LGBT rights that we have come to see and live with are at a very high risk of being stripped away and I would not be surprise if this administration will set up concentration camps for LGBT Americans. As a community we are no longer safe from the hatred and bigotry, the election of trump has given his supporters a green light to come after anyone they see a threat to their way of life.

    • Ben

Oh please. Don’t be such a drama queen. Trump cares about fixing healthcare, the economy, immigration, and trade deals much more than changing laws regarding social issues. Concentration camps!? I’ve got to laugh. Come on now.

      • NativeDom

That’s a complete crock…. Trump cares NOTHING about “fixing healthcare, the economy…”, etc… He cares about himself…. HIS money, HIS image, HIS ratings. Whatever your particular issue or concern about the state of American society right now, Trump has NO INTEREST in fixing it. He ran for President as a salve to his own ego, and he’s expressed no particular knowledge about any issues facing our country. Hell, he makes George Bush look like a towering intellect. He has publicly stated that he plans to turn over domestic AND international policy to his VP (why else would Mike Pence have taken the job?)… And what a fun time THAT will be for us gays, with that right-wing evangelical blowhard dictating policy and making up lists of wackadoodle conservative judges for Trump to nominate to federal courts. Face it, Trump voters… you made a YUGE mistake here. He’s not going to move this country forward…. He’s a demagogue who will only take us backwards as a nation.

        • Jay

I agree totally. He’s a celebrity and will not even bother with issues for anyone besides the very wealthy and elite. Tax codes are about to be realigned again in their favor. Social issues will be a non-factor.

  4. Darryl

If you really believe that a Trump Administration will uphold LGBTQ rights with Mike Pence as Vice President? Let’s just say I don’t think so. He is responsible for the laws in Indiana that punishes Gays, or leaves them uneasy to live in that State. Time and many law suits will end up happening because of these self righteous People, who lack the morality they claim we don’t have

  5. Jordan

Well as Gay man I don’t believe in Gay rights or Gay marriage. So whatever he does is fine with me. We just need to get some morality back and get this country back on track.

    • Jay

So because you haven’t gotten to that level with a man where you’re comfortable enough to commit legally, live as one financially, and go on with your life as a couple then no other gay or lesbian should have that peace of mind? I’ve met straight college kids who have 2 dads or 2 moms and they seem unharmed. What gives?

  6. Tommyboi

Hey, Shawnboi…..what country did you say you lived in.?? Saudi Arabia?? Syria?? And, what is it about a fucking piece of paper that is soooo important? If that is what you need to live in a loving relationship and express your love for someone, you have got a very shallow definition of what love is.

  7. That_guy51486

My prediction is that Trump will actually show his Democratic beliefs while in office. Don’t forget about his quote from People magazine all those years ago when he said he’d run on the Republican ticket to win the election because Republicans listen to whatever fox news tells them. He still scares the living fuck outta me though.

  8. Phil

Only a complete MORON would think that Trump will protect gay marriage or gay rights. He is a pathological liar. He is a foul mouthed, ill tempered, petulant child. He has no political experience, no foreign policy experience, no diplomatic experience.

He selected a man as vice president who thinks gay people can be cured with conversion therapy and shock therapy.

He changes his message depending on what ever group he is speaking to the moment.

Don’t trust a thing he says.

  9. Kev

How can anyone trust anything this guy says? He says one thing and then walks it back or acts as if he was misunderstood so that he can claim a modified version of his original claim. I think attacking marriage equality won’t be the real threat. His administration will be more about “protecting religious freedoms”.

  10. anonimatovato

I’d say this guy might only be keeping our marriage in tact cause it would be way too much work to strip them away and he’d get bigger back lash and protest than what he already has. But let’s not kid ourselves, Trump cannot be trusted.

  11. Anegro

This article stated… “Trump was also pressed on the growing number of his supporters perpetuating racist and bigoted attacks against Muslims, Latinos, and LGBTQ communities.” Who cares about the Blacks, right? Not significant enough to be included among the targeted and abused Muslims, Latinos, and LGBTQ communities? Or perhaps Blacks were welcomed with open arms at Trump rallies and political events? And no, they really didn’t eject a key Black member of the Republican part from the convention and no those are love letters to Blacks from some of his supporters, not racist epithets that have been scrawled across America. That simple omission was so much and is so much of what is truly wrong with this country.

  12. Macks

Calm down, gurls. Damn. We’re gonna be ok. Keep on as usual.
    Bigger fish to fry.
    Hilldabeast was a bigger threat.
She took million$ from folks that would kill all of us in a NY minute.

  13. Dean

I am baffled by the election process in America. The non stop media coverage, the numerous campaign events, three useless debates, and now people protesting. Can we all just take a break? It’s a bit much. Forget gay marriage. Remaining sane seems a challenge with this non stop coverage of election results. Please make it stop. As a first step i never tune into cnn.

  14. Chill_guy

America needs to take a chill pill! Go watch a movie, get a drink, get laid, or take a spa day! The non stop coverage of this election by the media is tiresome. Adam is one website where I come to escape this non-sense that’s omnipresent all over the internet. Seriously! Enough already! Let’s give it a rest! It’s not healthy to constantly talk about it.

  15. Matt

Why the incendiary headline? The Supreme Court has legalized gay marriage and the issue is over and done. It’s time to get on the Milo bandwagon and stop being snowflake gays that get histrionic over everything. The Democrats only want gays as voting suck boys and they care not a bit about what we want. It really is time to stop being drama queens as a block of voters because that is precisely how we are seen and therefore we are NOT taken seriously. Some of the most bigoted and intolerant people I know are other gays. We are our own worst enemy and the Democrats fueled that fire. I proudly voted for Trump as a gay man and was open about it.

  16. HotBotMan

I agree with everyone except for that Shaver caca for brains. It is hard to believe that any gay man or women voted for the Orange Umpa Loompa from the white chocolate factory, but I know it happened because I have talked to a few that said they voted for him and when I told them the GOP’s stands on Gay Married and Trump on times has agreed with them so why would you vote for him, they got silent. There were Minorities voting for the Orange Umpa Loompa too and I find that disappointing too. The man has told us just who he is. 1. He doesn’t ask forgiveness from GOD, only one being can boast that claim. 2. He plays to your fears and helps you justify them. 3. He hasn’t told you in detail what he will do so he really promised you nothing. 4. He never released his taxes so you don’t know who he is align with and I can tell you it is NOT AMERICA, ask Puten. 5. He is Orange and the only thing he needs not is a pitch fork. I can go on but I said enough. We are in a very dark place and it is time to stop sleeping and get involved in your local government, start at the root and work our way back up. We have four years to do it. peace my sisters and brothers.

  17. wpb4action

Amazing people still say better Trump than Hillary. So despite what he SAID not what we think he said or heard a rumor but what he actually SAYS and DOES is OK. Why people think this man is actually there to HELP or save people is beyond me. His plan to place KKK leaders into his inner circle. His plans to create a cabinet loaded with bigoted (Actual Records of bigotry) seems to be OK but God Forbid Hillary might have dome something like allow donors to meet with her personally. Oooo…..so horrible. Come on – wake up!

  18. Ron Edenfield

Nothing is safe under Trump/Pence, especially the Constitution and individual rights. Both are fascists and their agenda is to gut the Constitution, and to stack the Supreme Court and Congress to implement their agenda. Pence does not believe in the separation of church and state, which illustrates his disregard for the Constitution.

  19. Plsbendmeovr

Right or left it doesn’t matter.

The race was not about condeming LGBT, or islam, or about racism.

The race was about America being so fed up with career politicians that THE PEOPLE elected an outsider.

I have no party that stands for my ideals. I am bisexual, pro-choice, pro small government, and pro-military, and a staunch supporter of the second amendment. Oh, and I live about 2 hours from Bezerkley, the epicenter of the liberal left. Unfortunately there is NO middle ground in politics for me. Only a choice of the lesser of two evils for the past 20 years.

The riots by anti-Trump activists are shameful. You participated in a DEMOCRATIC election and lost. It happens. If you don’t like the result you should get out in your community and make a positive change for the next election, not trash your community and disrupt peoples lives.

  20. Leonard Sullivan

Trump claims that gay marriage was a Supreme Court decision and he will not change it; however, wasn’t Roe V. Wade a Supreme Court decision as well?
