News: Trump’s Family Benefits Plan Excludes Gay Men
Despite Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump touting himself as the LGBT community’s best choice for President of the United States, the campaign’s efforts at winning over the LGBT vote has consistently been sub-par.
For one, Trump and his running mate Mike Pence are running on a GOP platform that defines marriage as “between one man and one woman”. Pence also signed into law Indiana’s controversial Religious Freedom Law and personally believes in the effectiveness of conversion therapy. And now, the campaign’s “Family First” benefits plan is under fire for not including gay men or single-parent men.
In an interview with Cosmopolitan, Trump’s daughter Ivanka found herself on the defensive as she was asked to clarify regarding the plan’s exclusion of paternity leave. Ivanka is credited with coming up with the Trump campaign’s family policies.
While the plan would make expenses incurred because of child care tax deductible and ensure six months of maternity leave, the exclusion of paternity leave effectively discriminates against families with two gay male parents, or single fathers.
Ivanka initially tried to tout the advantages the plan would afford to same-sex couples, saying that there was “tremendous benefit” in allowing the mother to recover after childbirth and bond with her child. She also insisted that so long as the same-sex couple had legal married status under the tax code, the plan would “benefit the mother who has given birth to the child”.
Further prodding about the plan’s benefits for same-sex couples where the two parents are both men then had Ivanka referring the interviewer online to “go see all the elements of it.” The interviewer pressed even further, asking “So I just want to be clear, for same-sex adoption, where the two parents are both men, they would not be receiving special leave for that because they don’t need to recover or anything?”
Ivanka responded by saying “Well, those are your (the reporter) words, not mine. Those are your words. The plan, right now, is focusing on mothers, whether they be in same-sex marriages or not.” Ivanka then ended the interview abruptly, saying that she needed to “jump off”.

At the end of the day it will have to be modified to include men. 1976 Craig v. Boren, you can not discriminate based on sex. So this plan as it stands would be unconstitutional. He and Trump will work to appoint supreme court judges who will try to overturn the advances we have made during the Obama administration.
