News : CHARLIE SHEEN ANNOUNCED HE IS HIV-POSITIVE!
Charlie Sheen sat down with Matt Lauer on NBC’s Today Show to reveal his HIV-positive status. The interview had been billed as a “revealing personal announcement,” and sites like the Daily Mail and TMZ were reporting that it would be about his HIV status.
Last week, several news outlets began running salacious headlines about a Hollywood A-lister who has been trying to keep his HIV status a secret for years. Several prominent HIV-activists have criticized the reporting as fear-mongering and stigma-fueled rhetoric that is often become standard for mainstream HIV reporting.
I watched the Interview and have to admit that I liked it. Matt’s questions were on point, they even invited Charlie’s doctor to talk about transmission and the virus itself. Even though Charlie was obviously stressed about revealing his status, I feel that it was done properly. This interview will certainly educate people on how transmission is done and it’s a good thing they decided to invite his doctor to talk about it. I hope that it will also warn people on dangers to mix unprotected sex and drugs.

Wait a minute hold it I just read an article where he stated “my blood is free of hiv”. So which one is true. Can’t believe a damn thing. That article was recent. So Charlie which one is true. I read an article where this lady said “that thing is dirty, it’s no telling where it’s been”.
As a poz man, I feel his pain, I feel his depression, I understand his stigma. I applaud him for coming forth no matter his reasoning.
….a lot of people are HIV+, a lot of people are HIV-, a lot of people like to ride in blue cars on Sundays while singing showtunes…. But all three of these have one thing in common: it does not matter if you’re a celebrity or an unknown normal person.. NOBODY SHOULD FUCKING CARE except you and your healthcare provider! The only reason it’s news is because it’s Charlie Sheen. Is it Ryan White? Is it Joe Shmoe? No… It’s celebrity gossip of the worst kind. Get it off the news, and off the site and put in meaningful articles about research and science of HIV and other concerns.
Gosh, is his stuttering a symptom of HIV infection? I just can’t help criticize his handling of the whole affair. He’s been a careless individual and is not ANY sort of role model. He came clean because it was costing him millions! Sad!
Good for Charlie Sheen for going public with his HIV-positive status. That was wonderful that his doctor was there to help explain matters. Good luck, Charlie, and my thoughts and deepest regards are with you. This was a brave thing for you to do.

You KNOW why he did this, right? The Enquirer had been dogging him for 18 mos. over this (and his association with fairly well-known male porn star) and were getting ready to roll out the story. So, in order to scoop them, he got a quickie spot on Today on NBC to beat them to the newsstands. Other than that, his actions are full of the usual BS we used to see in the ’80s…denial, subterfuge and payoffs. He’s poz and I’m supposed to be surprised? Nope, not at all…hanging with porn stars and needle freaks will do it EVERY TIME!

I’m sorry for my spelling but I really don’t care about him. He got the money and he able to get the best health care in the world. What about the Spanish blacks and other minority groups that don’t get people to care about them? This does not make any sense though, Charlie Sheen is not a homosexual male at all, or bisexual, and would certainly never ever engage, in male to male sexual contact with another man in his entire life, he is as heterosexual, and straight as they come, he is a lot like old Frank Sinatra, and Dean Martin, from the good old days, he loves women and nothing but women, I always thought he always had safe intercourse with other women, well I am very, very, very, very, very, sorry to hear that Charlie Sheen has this virus, living inside he is such a great heterosexual male actor, well anyways I certainly wish him the best of luck in his life, and may the lord please be with him and his entire family.

What is wrong with you people? He was obviously nervous during the interview. I have liked him as an actor and not so much as he has been portrayed in the media. I have to hand it to him for going public. It had to take a lot of courage even if he did it to stop people from blackmailing. It had to TAKE ALOT for him to come out with this. Why can’t we just applaud that??? And hope that it helps someone dealing with this instead we tear the person down. It had to take so much courage for him to do this.

@James, for someone who has had it for 33 years your information is a little out of date.
Undetectable > 6 months and compliant = sexually non infectious.
Except for the mentally ill, substance abusers and the housing and food insecure, the overwhelming majority of POZ guys in treatment are undetectable and stay compliant.
Unfortunately Charlie Sheen may not be the best example as he is both mentally ill and a substance abuser!
However if he is staying compliant on his meds, then he doesnt owe anyone anything. It is between him and his doctor..a private medical matter, period

I guess from these previous post one can glean that there remains a lot of bitterness and hostility around HIV and not nearly enough compassion and understanding. Is it a wonder many are not open about their status and dialogue around HIV remains difficult and closeted.

Charlie Sheen has just made the list of people who are HIV POZ. It just proves that anyone can be infected, along with the many who are now diagnosed everyday in this Country, and around the World. Many of you have stated that who cares, but we all should care, and should talk more openly about how to stop this disease. We know how it’s transmitted, so trying to figure out how he contracted it, is more gossip then fact. I really don’t want to sound preachy, but he has many more things to deal with now and I hope he now takes better care of himself, and get the help he will need to survive. We have lost so many people to this virus, among them was my Sister. Those who are living with HIV are doing so with courage, strength, and support from those they love. Let’s not loose our sense of compassion.
We have empowered the government to force doctors and insurance companies to feed our health records into massive databases that can be accessed by pretty much anyone.
The media has paid ‘sources’ and people in government can easily look up your status. We’ve given up our privacy and many just pretend this data is being kept safe. For a millionaire personality, his data commanded a nice price and so he had to reveal his status.
I don’t care about him but let’s remember that very little of our ‘personal’ info is private these days, these tactics can be used against anyone who is seeking a job or an apartment. Be careful who and what you vote for if you value what is left of your right to privacy.
Many of you who dog his announcement a few things you need to consider. One is…when you found out you were hiv. positive did you immediately announce it to the world ? How much anguish,anger and scared you were . He is a Celebrity and his announcement will help bring this disease back to the forefront and save lives .

Here’s to supporting everyone else here who believes this is not news, not important, and not at all something anyone should care about, much less report on, and this whole blog is full of the same.
While I understand many individuals might consider Charlie Sheen “courageous”, let me delineate some points:
1) From what he has described, he has HIV either from unprotected sex and/or drug usage. That is not courageous. That is stupid. If he is stating that such behavior is stupid, I would agree he is courageous. If he is stating “I am coming forward because I was blackmailed by someone who picked up on my hidden life,” as CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC are reporting, that is covering one’s ass.
2) HIV is a problem, pure and simple. I would not be utilizing a guy creating such controversy in the media as well as among his peers, particularly the drama around “Two and a Half Men,” as a role model of courage.
3) The most courageous men I have seen talk about getting HIV have been stellar models talking about what a horrible mistake it was to not wear protection, use shared needles, etc. Greg Louganis gave a phenomenal interview about such, and at no point did he come off as a victim. He came off as an advocate who realized we have to be accountable for our own actions.
While we can feel sorry for Charlie, he is not a role model.

Oh, it nust have been too long since he was relevant in the news. I’m guessing next year he’ll “come out” as “bisexual” and the following year, he’ll have Hep-C.
I can not say I am surprised but I knew something was wrong way before his announcement and again not surprise at all.

He had multiple reasons for coming forward at this time. Not all altruistic.
But if in the process he can turn some lemons into lemonade more power to him. He CAN use his celebrity status to help build HIV awareness, maybe convince some folks to go get tested, and he already has demonstrated how to stop the bullies who have been blackmailing him.
I’ve never been a fan of his TV characters, but you gotta give him at least some respect for what he did today.
The one thing missing from the conversation today, and it was an oversight by Lauer as well as Sheen, was to help the audience understand that some of the people who are HIV+ were not having dozens of anonymous, unsafe experiences with multiple anonymous partners and their luck ran out, but rather they had a single unsafe experience and were simply unlucky. Part of the stigma associated with HIV is that those who are, get branded as sluts. Not always true.
Sometimes when you play with fire and get into the trouble Charlie has been in recently it bites you in the butt and just because you’re on the Hollywood scene doesn’t make you except…I have a parent that Charlie is a carbon copy of that also is HIV Positive and he has been in the Hollywood scene as well but just cameo appearance’s…it doesn’t matter though …only reason Charlie is getting the publicity is because of who he is which is really Jose Estefes …end of rant
His status is his business. There are far more important, pressing, and newsworthy issues going on in the world than any actor’s HIV status.
Im sorry, but he set the HIV positive community back 10 years. He’s a user. The only reason he went public was to stop the extortion and blackmailing. The only reason!

Really the only reason that Hispanics and Blacks have a higher rate of HIV is not because of education its Ignorance because of cultural and religious aspects.
