Entertainment : Oscars – The Day After

nph

Along with learning who won an Oscar at last night’s Academy Awards, we learned a lot more: Who to call (your parents to tell them you love ’em ), and what women should be paid (the same as men). From civil rights to immigration and health issues such as Alzheimer’s and Lou Gehrig’s diseases, advocacy was a big part of last night’s show. Here’s a quick rundown of what people are saying the day after the show.

-After winning a best supporting actress Oscar for Boyhood, Patricia Arquette addressed every mother and every American: “We have fought for everybody else’s equal rights. It’s our time to have wage equality once and for all — and equal rights for women in the United States of America.” Loud cheers rose as Arquette spoke, with Meryl Streep repeatedly pointing at Arquette as she applauded her alongside Jennifer Lopez.

-Race was also a topic at an Oscars in which all 20 of the nominees in the acting categories were white, and the Martin Luther King Jr. film Selma wasn’t picked to vie for any of the high-profile awards besides best picture. After winning for best original song for Selma’s “Glory,” John Legend and Common outlined a struggle that’s still continuing. In a performance and acceptance speech, they reflected how fully politics were intertwined with this Oscars show

-Graham Moore, winner of Best Adapted Screenplay for The Imitation Game, answered their call, speaking candidly of his own suicide attempt at age 16.” Moore told young people in the audience “to stay different, stay weird.”

-And then there was the show’s length, which is often indirectly proportional to another element — viewer interest. By the end, even host Neil Patrick Harris’ buoyantly impish approach (including an appearance in his underwear, in a nod to best picture winner Birdman) wasn’t much help to some except for us gay men.

-And then……Lady Gaga came. Her “Sound Of Music” medley was definitely my favorite moment at the 2015 Oscars. And I’m not the only one who loved it. Tons of celebs took Twitter and Instagram to rave about Mother Monster’s tribute to Julie Andrews. She stole the show! I woke up this morning and took my phone to check my Facebook account and my wall was full of comments and photos of Gaga. I think the gays will start to love her again!

How did you like the show?

Check out Gaga’s performance and John Legend and Common acceptance speech after the jump!

Caught the entire program. Way way too much non-movie content. It became a platform for just about every cause and human ill existing on the planet. Glad movie industry folk put their time and money into efforts outside of the craft, but it seemed like a case of who could out-social cause who.

Neil Patrick Harris was fine. Not great. But fine. We’ve now all seen him in his tighty whities Not sure if it was a case of “he’s a professional; the show MUST go on!” or if he was hawking the cause of leaky bladders. Either way, it’s “Hooray! A great gay guy with a great body.” We can all sleep peacefully now or wank ourselves into oblivion over it if that’s what some care to do.

Gaga? The vocals were a fine tribute to Julie Andrews. A nice surprise. But the whole performance collapsed the first time she flailed her right arm and flashed the giant jazz trumpet tatoo during the much well known vocals. I didn’t even care to try to figure out what the large mess was on the inside of her left upper arm when she flailed that one. Too much distraction in what would have otherwise been a great tribute and performance.

It was TOO long! The producers should allow 30 seconds for acceptance speeches, then loud music and onto a commercial. Gaga was great, as were John Legend and Common. NPH in his underwear: was that a sock in there or is he that hung? He is cute, though, and has a nice body and a good host. I will host him in my bed!

Ridiculous that NPH strutted out in his briefs. What was the point? He obviously had a sock in there. Also, no need for social activist comments. Save them for other times and venues that are appropriate for those types of things. This is an awards show and should be kept that way. Gaga was rah-rah. Best I’ve ever heard her. She should ditch the get-up and go all out for that kind of music.

I have to say I like Lady Gaga, but, when I realized that she was going to sing selections from Sound of Music ( I’m a HUGE Julie Andrews fan), I thought she was going to ruin it. But I was surprised. Is she a Julie Andrews replacement? No. But she once again she showed can sing standards as well as ” her” music. She did, what Madonna should have did a long time ago. The “Lady” and “The Dame was a fantastic pair. And I have to say that The Sound of Music and Julie still look darn good after 50 years!

    jokes not that interesting
seriously in underware at the Oscar’s
yes we all know “thankyou mom and dad”
gaga for gogo no thanks and that one dress looked like a burlap bag with red glove
I know everyone complains about something
a bit to sterile and rigid for jews giving awards to jews oops did I state that

Julie Andrews was a much better singer 50 years ago than Lady Gaga, as entertaining as she sometimes can be.

And I’ve never understood why everyone thinks Patricia Arquette is a great actress. In my mind, she seems so stiff and stilted in her delivery of lines.

I’m so over Neil Patrick Harris. He seems fake. And I don’t like that he’s a sort of spokesperson for gay people. He seems like he’s a total actor in everything, especially life.
I mean, I’m sure he’s nice to his fans or whatever. He just seems like he’s always putting on an act. (¬_¬)

Selma just wasn’t that good. And other than Selma, there just were not that many leading roles for black actors in 2014 that were Oscar-worthy. Were they supposed to nominate Jaime Foxx for portraying Electro?

Do the African Americans rooting for Selma realize that the main actor was British? They couldn’t find an African American actor to play an African American?

I couldn’t for the life of me figure out why they thought it was appropriate for NPH to strut out in his underwear. It was totally inappropriate. What an arrogant ass. I’m sure it didn’t help the gay cause in any way. Any credibility he had is now gone.

I like NPH, and he did well hosting other shows, but this years Oscars were mediocre. The timing was bad and I was expecting more, step out of the box and do things others haven’t. Lady Gaga was the highlight of the show. John Travolta is now even more creepy then before touching all over what her name’s face. Everyone said Birdman shouldn’t of won the Best Picture it was just blah, but it resonated with Hollywood because it was about Hollywood. It’s not about art anymore. Boyhood a so boring I had to watch it in 5 installments. Actors get awards for acting themselves these days, I didn’t see anything Oscar worthy in that movie at all.

The only actor worth mentioning who did a phenomenal performance was Eddie Raymane in ‘The Theory of Everything’. His acting in that movie was just amazing. He has a bright future in acting.

Race had nothing to do with Sean Penn’s statement. He only was referring to immigration status. Some posting are racist if you assume a person’s race based on the country of their citizenship.

  12. Tom

Someone should tell Obama and the White House.
They still don’t have equal pay for women.

Take this one down also, politcal cowards.

I watched about 30 minutes of the show and then lost interest. How many people watched all of the movies nominated and compared the acting, directing, music, special effects, costumes and so on?! On Lady Gaga, I don’t think we’ve seen the best of her yet.

  14. tallguy51

I watched the whole show. I thought Neil Patrick Harris was good. Nothing like Billy Crystal or Bob Hope(for those of you who remember). Whoopi was even very good. I would love to see Ellen hosting. It was a good show although no surprises on the awards. Lady Gaga was a delightful surprise even though I knew she could sing beyond her genre. I mean come on guys…its an awards show. Expect the unexpected and if there is none, there is the channel changer. It’s Hollywood’s big night…don’t rain on their parade…no pun intended!

  15. YoungbloodG

Didn’t watch this year… I didn’t catch enough of the nominated pics to have much interest… though if I’d known that the excellent NPH was going to be in his underwear I’d have definitely tuned in! David Burtka is a lucky man!

  16. Pageboy50

Lady G…very talented..but the tats on her arms was a real distraction(and I have a couple of tats)…very out of place for what she was singing. NPH in his undies…so? He is a very talented actor and has come a long way since Doogy(?) Howard days…does anyone remember that show? Cock sock???…….Here we go again with measuring a man’s worth by the size of his dick…..grow up! The oscars are always way tooooooo long. The best thank you speech was by JK Simmons….thanking those that really matter in one’s life and are a huge contributer to one’s success in any career or life. Oh, btw….u slap a kid in school and u r before a judge lickity split! Have to agree with other comments….most of the “winning” films are very boring!

  17. james blackwell

I thought the entire show sucked… NPH may had caused a lot of curosity being in his tighty whitie, but I seen bigger on puppies…This is one time I can say, I don’t need more sausage in my buns.. NPH was a disappointment, he look so huge when he was playing Dukie Houser and was in his tighty whities in one episode of the hat show… Curiosity did kill the cat…
