Protection from HIV and STDs through the use of condoms is not always as simple as grab one and slip it on. There are some things everyone should know about condoms.  Hopefully this post will help you protect yourself from HIV and STDs by providing a simple list of condom facts:

·         When using a latex condom never use oil-based lube (e.g., Vaseline or petroleum jelly, shortening, mineral oil, massage oils, body lotions, and cooking oil, Crisco) because they can weaken latex, causing breakage. Always use water-based or silicone lube (silicone lubes last longer but can stain your bedding).

·         If you are allergic to latex, use a polyurethane condom.

·         Lambskin condoms do NOT provide protection from HIV or STDs.

·         More is not better. When wearing two condoms during sex, an excessive amount of friction will occur between the two condoms and can increase the possibility that one or both will break.

·         If you feel the condom break at any point during sexual activity, stop immediately, withdraw, remove the broken condom, and put on a new condom.

·         If your penis is longer than 7 inches and or more than 4.5 inches in circumference standard condoms may be uncomfortable and larger sizes may more appropriate. For those that are less than average (under 6 inches long and/or 4 inches in circumference) standard condoms may fall off during sex, look into snug fit condoms. Regardless of your size, your condoms should fit snuggly to ensure it stays on.

·         Check the date, condoms DO expire, and do not store then in your wallet, sitting on them can puncture them and the heat may also damage them. Condoms should be kept dry and at room temperature and away from things that could puncture them. Nevertheless, a condom that has been through harsh conditions is still better than no condom at all.

·         The thinner condoms, such as the Kimono Micro Thin Condom, can provide more feeling.  If you or your partner is well endowed look for the Large sizes as smaller varieties may prevent you from having an orgasm or may break easier than then thicker condoms.

·         Looking for an alternative to the traditional condom? Check out the condom with the most unfortunate name (simply because it implies it is only ‘made for a woman’) the Female Condom. Female condoms adhere to the lining of the anus and provide a roomier experience for the top. The female condoms can also put the bottom in charge when the top will not wear one.

·         After you cum and before your penis gets soft, grip the rim of the condom and carefully pull out of your partner. Then gently pull off the condom, wrap it in a tissue and throw it in the trash.
