Movie : Tom of Finland

Hey, guys! There’s a new movie coming our way this autumn titled Tom of Finland by Dome Karukoski. It’s a biopic based on the life of the late Finnish artist named Touko Laaksonen (1920–1991) who at the time, was only known to the public by his pseudonym Tom of Finland.

The movie tells the beginnings of Touko (played by Pekka Strang), his life in the Finnish Army when he was conscripted to serve during the World War II, and his subsequent life where we started to meet challenges and struggles as a budding artist. Thankfully, he managed to surmount them all and today, Touko Laaksonen is best remembered for his homoerotic fetish art of muscular men that served as the catalyst for his notable influence on the “late twentieth century gay culture.” Cultural historian Joseph W. Slade called him the “most influential creator of gay pornographic images.”

Tom of Finland is coming this October 13 in New York and on October 20 in San Francisco and Los Angeles. It premiered on January 27 at the Göteborg Film Festival. This awesome film serves as Finland’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the upcoming 90th Academy Awards.
