Celebrities : Barry Manilow Came Out as Gay and Married
Barry Manilow, 73, publicly comes out as gay and he is married!
Manilow confirmed to People he married his longtime partner and manager of 39 years, Garry Kief, in April 2014. The ceremony, held at their 53-acre Palm Springs estate, had “20-30” attendees all of whom came thinking they were only going for a “lunch,” People reported. A year later, the information regarding their wedding leaked to the press but Manilow neither confirmed nor denied the story.
It was because Manilow was thinking of his fans, he said, “I thought I would be disappointing them if they knew I was gay. So I never did anything.”
But it turned out his fears were for nothing because, “When they found out that Garry and I were together, they were so happy. The reaction was so beautiful — strangers commenting, ‘Great for you!’ I’m just so grateful for it.”
The couple met in 1978 when Kief was a TV executive. Manilow said, “I knew that this was it.” He admitted that he was “one of the lucky ones” and that he was “pretty lonely before that.”
Check out a photo of the couple below.

Manilow revealed further that he was indeed in love with his first wife Susan Deixler, his high school sweetheart, whom he referred to as his second love and that there was no struggle with his sexuality then. They got married in 1964. Unfortunately they were very young (Susan was 19 years old, Barry was 21) and he simply was not ready to settle down yet. His whole life then, revolved to his first love which was music and so the couple would separate a year later.
When the news of Manilow’s marriage to Kief first surfaced in 2015, Susan told the Daily Mail in an interview:
“I wish him well. I’m happy for him. I’m glad that he’s found love and happiness … What happened between us, our relationship, is ancient history and I don’t want to dig back into ancient history. It’s 50 years ago. You have to remember that I’m not a celebrity. I have children, a life…all that was a long time ago.”
Manilow has plenty of hit songs which included Mandy (1974), Copacabana (1978), and Looks Like We Made It (1977).
You guys indeed made it. Although three years late, congratulations on your wedding Barry and Garry!
Wow. Everyone knew he’s a fag. Why come out now. Everyone knows he a butt pirate
Never thought he was straight lol
How presumptuous to think other people care about what makes your dick hard.
In, out, up, down, who the hell cares!! Just live your life and be a productive honest citizen.
Wow, I am shocked at this major news. I never would have known he was Gay. He sure fooled us for many years…………
I knew he was a fruitcake for years!!…he didnt fool me!
No one ever suspected he was gay? Lol but I wish them wel
Good for them. But, seriously, was Barry’s sexuality ever in question? And what does it matter?
WEEKEND IN NEW ENGLAND is one of my favorite songs. There, I said it. Period.
Wow A4A. This “revelation” is two years old. And, it’s Barry Manlow … an incredible gentleman who dazzled the globe with his character and talents for decades. Now you out him?
he made is coming out yesterday FYI
FYI He was out when his marriage as known, not when A4A finally announced it.
lol he made his coming out 2 days ago, google it. He didn’t came out when YOU decide he did, but we HE did.
good for him.
I understand why he kept quiet for so long.
name 5 celebrities who were out in 1977. you can’t because there were none. different time, different world.
You understand, Einathens. A different time with a different ripple effect for those with those decades under their belt.
He sang at the Concert on the Esplanade one 4th of July and was a laughingstock to the Bostonians around us. Now, he looks just shriveled and old — almost like an old lesbian with her partner. Still, if he’s happy, good for him. I’m sure no one in the entourage suspected they were an item these past 39 years (or is it 41 if this is 2 years old)? I never liked his music.
Love his music…and happy for him.
LOLOLOLOL NO WAY I WOULD HAVE EVER GUESSED HE WAS GAY duh from the 1st time i heard or saw him on TV
Quit bashing people what is the satisfaction people get from talking badly or downplaying another human , All it does is make you look like and be seen as a complete asshole and moronic to say the least . The world would be a better place if the rude assholes just shut their pie holes and looked at themselves in the miror and picked them selves apart before commenting like they do
if you are on adam4adam then you are gay too so why all the negative comments ?
I’m shocked. Who even suspected with that hair and all the work done!!?? When we heard him at the Esplanade over the dough of July the year he did Copacabana I know no one in the audience ever suspected.
