Health: Facebook Launches New Suicide Prevention Tools

Facebook launched new suicide prevention tools and resources in response to incidents in the past involving some users who livestreamed their suicide through Facebook Live feature. With these tools, people watching a live video can now reach out and help friends in crisis real-time and report the video, they can also opt to chat with a crisis support organization through its Messenger. Organizations involved with the project include Crisis Text Line, the National Eating Disorder Association, and the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline to name a few.

The move couldn’t have come at a better time as there has been an increase in calls to organizations such as Trans Lifeline and the Trevor Project from members of the transgender community owing to the reversal of federal transgender bathroom protections. But what’s more is that the help extends not only to the person in distress but also to their concerned family members and friends.

For more suicide prevention tips, click Help Center. Click here for other hotlines around the world and click here to know more about Facebook’s new suicide prevention tools.

LGBT youth in crisis can call the Trevor Project Lifeline at 866-488-7386 while trans in need of help can reach Trans Lifeline at (877) 565-8860 for US and (877) 330-6366 for those who are in Canada. On the other hand, anyone in crisis can connect with The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at (800) 273-8255 24 hours a day. Always remember that someone cares and they are simply a phone call away.

the addiction to social media and its high availability as an environment where reality becomes skewed contribute heavily to the decline in people’s social and emotional intelligence…even more so for those struggling with personal or mental issues.
Better for Facebook to disappear and have people return to a life lived in reality than to offer mental health assistance from the same forum that contributes to a decline in mental health or offers a platform for troubled people to harm themselves or others.
