News: Celebrities React To Trump Trans Policy

It’s been close to a week since the Trump administration withdrew Obama-era guidelines on how schools should accommodate transgender students, and celebrities who are transgender or related to someone who is transgender have made their thoughts known.

Just recently, actress and activist Laverne Cox spoke by phone to The View about her thoughts on this new Trump order, as well as the upcoming Supreme Court case of transgender teen activitist Gavin Grimm. Grimm was a guest on The View when Cox called in.

“Bathroom access really is not about bathrooms…They’re trying to make sure that these bathroom laws are about whether trans people can exist in a public space,” Cox pointed out. “That is what this is about. This is not a states’ rights issue, it’s a civil rights issue.”

Grimm also pointed out that “when you leave decisions on civil rights up to states, it happens for a very long time that people don’t have civil rights.”

There has also been pushback from celebrities who are ostensibly Trump supporters. Trump’s most prominent transgender supporter, Caitlyn Jenner, tweeted “Well @realDonaldTrump, from one Republican to another, this is a disaster. You made a promise to protect the LGBTQ community. Call me.”

The tweet also included a video, which you can watch below.

While Cox and Grimm’s thoughts on the matter have been lauded, Jenner has had a harder time of it, if Twitter responses are any indication. Numerous people have pointed out that Jenner should have expected this from Trump since the campaign and not have aligned herself with him.

Jackie Evancho, second place winner of the fifth season of America’s Got Talent and arguably the biggest name to perform during Trump’s inauguration, also asked to have a meeting with Trump to talk about transgender rights. Evancho has a transgender sister named Juliet.

Talking to CNN, Juliet echoed Grimm’s words, saying “It needs to be on a federal level because if it’s not and it’s left in states’ hands, then we are going to have this many states saying one thing, and this many states saying another.”

“It’s just going to divide America more than it already is,” Jackie added. “We’re trying to work to piece America together again.”

On a positive note, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said that Trump would “welcome” a meeting with Evancho.

How do you feel about the decision to let transgender rights be resolved by the states rather than the federal government? Share your thoughts with is in the comments below.

This is a hot mess and they should’ve left the bathroom bill alone. They did this on purpose because they knew not all stats would approve trans folks using the bathroom they want! They’re trying to cover up trans phobia, but it’s very obvious! Trump seriously needs to get impeached pronto!

unfortunately for your viewpoint, most people support science and biology, where biological males should use the mens bathroom and biological females should use the womens bathroom; x and why chromosomes do not lie. Science is not discrimination.

Also, all Trump did was actually say let the local governments decide what they want to do, he didn’t even take a side. He did not try to dictate a new regulation from washington dc. if you think its unlawful to not allow a male into a women bathroom, then go ahead and challenge it in court.

This is certainly an interesting battle that is going on by the conservatives on this matter since bathroom usage by transgender individuals has been going on many years without them even giving it any thought. Obviously transgender individuals are becoming more open and out in society so this brings more visibility. I agree that this ruling should be at federal level so the laws are consistent from state to state for civil rights just like same sex marriage. If desegregation was left at the state level, how long would it have been for all the states to implement laws on it? Interesting how certain items Trump believes should be at state level vs. federal like this major decision but it is now being reported that he believes federal law regarding marijuana usage should override state laws.

Just nervously waiting to see what else TrumPutin’s going to destroy about the LGBTQ people. It’s sad that somebody on FB praised this announcement. When I simply commented that this should NOT be left in the hands of the state & be should be a national decision since (as stated above) some kids will be impacted simply because of where they live, I was deleted from the conversation & my friendship with said person (whom, BTW, also did the same thing to others who shared my opinion in the thread). I’m all for people to (dis)like a person, but to act so childish as to delete comments/people from the discussion simply in that they differ from yours is sad. BTW, nothing offensive/name calling was mentioned in the posts of those of us whom disagree with the decision; however, the trash talking by others after their deletion was disgusting.
I’m also torn as to this person because I’m expecting more anti-LGBTQ decisions from TrumPutin & it’ll be a big smack in the face to this person. Part of me will be glad to see it while part feels sad in a “I warned you from the start” feeling.

If you were born with a penis and testicles, your male. If you were born with the ability to give birth your female. Simple biology.

If you chose to have an operation to become the opposite gender, there’s nothing wrong with that and the government shouldn’t force you to use a certain type of restroom because of it. It’s simple and blatant discrimination

      • Gerry

and if its your choice to have this elective surgery, the government should not be obliged to pay for it. biological science is not discrimination. X and Y chromosomes do not lie. no one is preventing a sex change person from using the bathroom, just use the one that matches your real gender. besides, there are no heckling parties waiting outside the door either.

    • Gerry

Exactly: XX chromosomes = female, and XY chromosomes = male. *Its binary.*
Anyone who thinks differently is a science denier. Saying that you get to choose you gender kind of flys in the face of the whole “i was born this way” political nonsense doesn’t it?

I think we need to stop using the phrase “transgender rights”. Actually I think we need to stop using the term “transgender” and simply acknowledge these people are simply pretending to be the opposite sex but I digress. The choice of bathroom is not a right. The Bill of Rights are rights and they apply to everyone. Bathrooms are designed by gender for a reason. Therefore a male does not belong in a female’s bathroom and vice versa. Why is there no respect given to the vast majority who don’t want someone of the opposite sex in their restroom or changing room. One’s gender is determined by biology and anatomy. So the bottom line is we need to stop this nonsense of thinking gender is fluid and can be altered on a whim. If we did then this “trans” nonsense can go away. As for Mr. Cox and Mr. Jenner’s comments, I couldn’t care less what these two men have to say about the issue.

So your solution is what? Because you clearly sound like a gay-hating Republican who voted for Trump and believe in Pence’s straight camps. Should men be uncomfortable because a man with tits and a skirt is using the urinals in the men’s room or should women be uncomfortable because a man with tits and a skirt is using the stalls in the women’s room?

For me, the old policy created a special class of people whose rights trumped others. A fairer, reasonable, and equitable policy would do away with gender specific bathrooms, creating true equality for all. This is common in Europe, but would be a long needed change for the US. The change could be phased in, requiring all new public facilities to have stalls for urinals and toilets much like portopotties are set up at outdoor events. Existing facilities would be grandfathered for some reasonable period of time so as not to cause undue financial hardships on businesses. I’m not favoring a Federal law other than a directive that state or local building codes be required to have new standards in place within 24 to 36 months. With that kind of directive, states and local municipalities would put their heads together and create reasonable and effective timelines which would be much better than the old short-sighted law which dumped the problem on school systems to solve, while ignoring public, commercial and work spaces.

Jenner…what a joke and a half, another byproduct of the Kartrashian “brainless-is-good” circus. Well, gay boys, you got what you asked for (well, 40% of you, anyway)….VNS in exit polling showed that fully 40% of the LGBTQIwhatthefuckever community voted for the Orange Shitgibbon., and you already see what he’s done in a month. It’s going to get worse. And no, “Kaitlyn,” he’s NOT going to call you.

  8. Cole Stevens

Let me start out first by stating to all…. I am a supporter of all of us having the right to be ourselves and having the full right to being ourselves and loving whomever we wish to love. That being said, I do not wish a man under any circumstances or pretenses to have the right to enter the restroom my daughter is in just because he feels more comfortable wearing a skirt. The safety of some should not be reduced because of increasing the liberties of others. My personal opinion is that a person should be allowed to use the restroom based upon the equipment they possess at the time they enter the restroom. Simply put, You have a Vagina; Go to the lady’s room, You have a penis; Go to the men’s room. If Bruce Jenner wishes to be a Lady, I’m all for it. Lose the Penis and go to the ladies room if you wish. Keep the penis and the Men’s room is more suitable. Just my opinion but it seems soo common sense to me. I also believe in the allowance of public places to make choices as to whom can use their premises and in what manner. I believe a business owner should have the right to place a designation upon their premises as to who can enter, be served, what patrons can do or not do and who can use their restrooms etc. If I as a patron of the establishment don’t like it, I can also choose not to go to that business. Almost like being a citizen of a FREE country…. Have an Awesome day gentlemen…

Waiting to see what all these Trump supporting gays that voted for him have to say about this. Biggest sellouts in homosexual history.

    • Fuckoff

Your the type of gay that people hate gays. You push till people can’t take it. Back off before you do more damage. Simple it”s not the federal gov problem that you are a mess. Penis to men bathroom and vaginas to women. Are kids don’t need this problem.

      • Gerry

Maybe we need to just reliable the bathrooms to Penis Room, and Vagina Room, problem solved! Im sure the Trump-hater’s heads would explode then. hahaha
