In a move to declare the space LGBTQ friendly, Planting Peace launched the very first pride flag in space last August 17, 2016 just outside of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Cracking a joke that they could not afford a rocket, Planting Peace made this effort possible by fastening the rainbow flag to a high altitude balloon. The pride flag rose 112, 050 feet above the earth, reaching its peak at 21.1 miles before making its way back home.
Thanks to the camera attached to the balloon, this momentous occasion was captured on film. Take a look at the amazing video shown below.
“I’m just pumped space is gay now,” co-founder of Planting Peace Aaron Jackson said in an interview with NewNowNext. “I would love for LGBTQ children who are struggling to see this, and look up to the stars and remember that the universe shines brightly for them, and they are not alone.”
Further, Planting Peace said in the video above that the launch “reinforces their universal message to the LGBTQ family.”
“You are loved, valued and beautiful,” the video reminded the audience. Adding, “There is nothing wrong with you. You are not alone, and we will stand with you.”
Planting Peace is a nonprofit organization that supports various global causes including orphanages in Haiti and India, anti-bullying, and rainforest preservation to name a few. The organization gained worldwide attention when they built a home called the Equality House—a rainbow-colored house—located just across the street from Westboro Baptist Church (WBC), a hate group known to hate the LGBT community and soldiers.
Momentous occasion? That’s a bit of an exaggeration. By the way, I don’t see how this makes space gay now?
Silly. Really?
“I’m just pumped space is gay now” says it all. I almost feel bad for Fred PHellps having this guy in the neighborhood.
