Speak Out : And My Power Is…
Most of the time my brain is working on overdrive. I’m currently in school working on my second degree. My first degree was Music Performance, focusing on piano and flute (all jokes are welcome) and composition. As it turns out, if you want to play in a symphony all you have to do is audition and if you want to be a super star or the next Beyonce…it’s a lot more about who you know in the industry and having enough money to hire an agent. So now I’m going to school for languages, French and Mandarin Chinese specifically, in order to work in an Embassy, military contracting or business translations. I speak four languages at the moment and spend my free time writing music and making CDs (mostly as a hobby and when I’m too cheap to buy actual gifts) so my brain is always working.
On occasion I focus my mental prowess into a deeply insightful, poignant and altogether important question: If I woke up tomorrow and had suddenly acquired a super power, which one would it be!!?!?
Talking about powers is fun, and human beings on a basic level are always looking for power. As the dominant species of the planet (arguably) we are very protective of our place here. Why do you think Marvel Comics is having the time of their lives making all these superhero movies? Well, we love it! We like the idea of flying through the air without being in an airplane, reading peoples’ thoughts, moving objects around with just the power of our mind, teleportation, opening dimensional portals, prophetic dreams, turning any object into solid gold, shooting blasts of energy out of our hands, making great spaghetti or pastries, becoming invisible…it’s all awesome. It gives us a sense that we all have internal power that will allow us to accomplish anything that we want to.
Protectively, I’ve always wanted super strength because I never felt like I could protect my friends and family (much less myself) when I was younger. And the idea of kicking a tank across a highway is…well, it’s too cool!
In terms of Freedom, I’ve always loved the idea of the power of flight…I grew up feeling caged in by my sexuality, the pressures of everyones’ expectations, etc. so the idea of flying has always been appealing to me. Even my a4a name comes from that idea, “God make me a bird so I can fly far, far away”.
And just because I’d love to be an all powerful supreme being…I’ve enjoyed the idea of Omega-class (uncharted power) telepathy (reading minds, controlling minds, implanting ideas, rewriting memories, blasting someone’s brain) and telekinesis (moving objects with my mind).
I consider most gay people superheroes for what we have to go through and what the generations have gone through before us. But if you could wake up tomorrow and have that extra super ability to help you along…which one would you pick?
(MakeMeABird)
I already have a power… the intelligence and the confidence to walk away from anything and any one bad and be a better person for it.
I would have to say that if I were to acquire a super human ability it would have to be the ability to manipulate human thought to be more happy. aside from the warm and beautiful treatment to one another, happy thoughts release endorphins. Endorphins lead to productivity.
I’d like the ability to alter matter into any form, i guess with the limit being that the mass of what i alter must remain the same, regardless of altered form.
for example, touching a wall and it becomes a wall of water, making air dense enough to walk on or to prevent myself from death from falling high distances, turning fire to ice, etc. maybe if there was enough dust in a particular area, i could turn the whole place into stone.
Good for you on the Mandarin Chinese. It will be a great business asset. I would also suggest Arabic and Russian.
In terms of superhero powers, I always wanted to be Lightning Lad! 🙂
I live in this wonderfully supportive, impressively unified and egalitarian gay community.Seeing as I’m a week older than 18,9 ounces overweight, and don’t live in Aberzombie And Bitch,my superpower is invisibility.
WoW! I always see myself as the Marvel character Blink… But for Halloween, a have gone as the Booty Bandit….eradicating unsanitized booty around the globe….hah…hah…hah
I would trade my current superpower for something else in a heartbeat.
My current superpower is the ability to fog up car windows quickly even with the air blasting on full I can fog up the windows I sit close to. I burn hotter than almost everyone else I know somewhere between 99.1 to 99.5 on average. Which was cool as a kid because if I wanted to leave school all I had to do was complain and once they stuck a thermometer in me – instant ticket home. I loved school though so rarely pulled that stunt but when I did want to ditch it was a piece of cake.
The super power I want in exchange for it is incognito. I would love to be ignored whenever I want. To just have people not notice me. I am constantly bombarded by people coming up to me all the time.
I walk into work and it’s 3 people on me before I even get to my desk and hang my outerwear up. I walk into a store and have clerks HOVER over me offering assistance I don’t want or need. Go to a restaurant and not only is my server giving me all kinds of attention but so’s the manager, other servers in the vicinity, the bus person/hostess and other diners chatting me up. Friends & business associates I dine with have noticed it too, it’s that pronounced.
Thing is I’m not movie star handsome, don’t have a body to die for nor am I rich as Midas. I just have one of those faces and carriage that signal to people that not only am I approachable but apparently I’m some sort of long lost friend. It really gets annoying at times.
I’d love to walk into a straight bar after work, sit down and have a quiet drink by myself and unwind from the day but inevitably some guy or girl will sit down near me and strike up a conversation. I’d love to walk into Wal-Mart and just do my shopping without a sales clerk asking me if I need help. I would get off on being able to sneak into a 2nd movie at a theater but those concession workers would know what I was up to, the local ones remember what kind of pop & popcorn seasoning I buy. Like as in I rarely have to order they just ask me if I want the usual (Pepsi, medium popcorn w/butter & white cheddar topping).
So yeah give me the power of INCOGNITO!
Telekinesis, definitely. The ability to control matter, nay mass, with just a thought. Could anything be more bad ass, nay I tell you, nay!
make mine the power to read minds and predict the future. That would be awesome.
That’s an easy answer, Elasticity like Mr. Fantastic. and just stretch or change the shape of my anatomy at will. 😉
I would be able to multiply myself at will… more can get done on myvown terms with less energy spent begging others to do it
Have the power of an 11-inch cock. Mine is five and a half inches now and to have it doubled in size . . . well, it would be sticking out for the whole world to see every hour of the day!
Superpowers don’t make life easier and what I get from the Marvel movies is that most of the mutants would rather be ordinary. I can understand that to an extent with people being uncomfortable for whatever reason for my chocolate skin or expecting me to fill certain required norms for being of color, gay, and male. There are many negatives as well as positives to being outside the norm. I choose to highlight the positives to outshine and diminish the negatives.
Our superpower as humans is our brains. We should obsess over it even more so than all other parts of our physicalities. As gay men, if we connected more with our minds above our waistlines then we would respect and hopefully care for each other beyond the exterior.
Maybe it’s the fact that my mid 30s mark is approaching next month or that romantically I’m in a 1yr separation from my bf, but I only wish for the power to make the best decisions for all parties involved. That is a power I’ve had for a long time and it seems like the decisions are becoming more complex and the second guessing game even harder to play. Maybe that is the superpower we all seek which is to be seen for all that we are beyond our bodies.
You seem equally talented at writing as you are in music.
Bravo!
Joe
My superpower? The strength to live a life of self-sufficiency, purpose, integrity, to be my true self; to be decent to all, and the resolve to never give up no matter what. That automatically would make me better than many members of Congress (read, GOP). As for heroes – having just come from a viewing of “The Imitation Game”, I urge EVERY gay man, certainly, to see it (take friends!) and see what a TRUE hero is. And why, if it weren’t for Alan Turing, we might all be speaking German today!
My super power would be being a dragon.
If I could have a super power it would be the power to heal myself, and regenerate. This way I wouldn’t have to suffer anymore waiting on a liver transplant. I know this is a selfish wish, but that’s the one I’d pick!
Currently my super power is distance shooting 😉
But I would love the power of my body automatically bio-adapting to whatever environment it’s in for survival. Glacial ice? Molten lava? Heat death of the universe? All set. 🙂
Telekinesis and telepathy.
And an awesome bottom!
I also have the ability to have compassion and empathy for others.
I think the power that trumps all others is immortality. For with immortality you have the time to accomplish ANYTHING, and the time to learn EVERYTHING! You would see progress occur over generations (if not millennial) and have a unique perspective of how we got where we are from where we started from. Plus there’s the added bonus of being able to watch all your enemies eventually die and you remain youthful and virile 😉
If I got up tomorrow morning with a superpower I would want it to be HEALING TOUCH. I think that the power to heal people of both their physical and mental illness, or wound would be awesome.
Does anyone else think the author is crazy?
My superpower is being able to differentiate between what’s important and what isn’t.
Space-Time Manipulation. Like the guy from the show Heroes. Basically being able to stop time and go forwards & backwards in time as well as being able to teleport wherever I want to go.
how interesting, so many who wish for a somewhat selfish and self centered power, but thankfully, so many who wish or acknowledge a compassionate wish for the ability to help others. I guess we really are a cross section of the ‘Normal’ population.
Yes, this is very interesting Gladespring. It gives us a glimpse of what we really are besides our gonadal “powers”.
Each person is born with the universe at their disposal. It is what we choose to do with it that differentiates us. The gifts (powers) present themselves and we either accept or reject them as they come along. Some of us recognize the gift(s) and accomplish great things. Others will spend a lifetime searching and wondering why they weren’t endowed with such gifts and wind up unfulfilled. And then there are those who recognize they have a power but curse it. That’s a pity!
To DouglasDean – You are so fortunate to be able to affect people in that way. Such a grand power but yet your are annoyed and trifled by it. So now it is your curse. What a shame!
To Jay – To have such wisdom and hope yet you are barely 30! That’s remarkable!
And finally to MakeMeABird – Nicely crafted to solicit the variety of comments seen above. It’s an interesting departure from our usual cock tales and dilemmas
