Health : Is homophobia associated with homosexual arousal?
Hey guys, I wanted to share this very interesting study that I red online on psychologytoday.com. It basically says that homophobic men are probably the ones who fantasize about having man-on-man action. Read about the study after the jump and let me know your thoughts!
Dave
One study asked heterosexal men how comfortable and anxious they are around gay men. Based on these scores, they then divided these men into two groups: men that are homophobic, and men who are not. These men were then shown three, four minute videos. One video depicted straight sex, one depicted lesbian sex and one depicted gay male sex. While this was happening, a device was attached to the male participant’s penises. This device has been found to be triggered by sexual arousal, but not other types of arousal (such as nervousness, or fear – arousal often has a very different meaning in psychology than in popular usage).
When viewing lesbian sex and straight sex, both the homophobic and the non-homophobic men showed increased penis circumference. For gay male sex, however, only the homophobic men showed heightened penis arousal.
Heterosexual men with the most anti-gay attitudes, when asked, reported not being sexually aroused by gay male sex videos. But, their penises reported otherwise.
Homophobic men were the most sexually aroused by gay male sex acts.
while im sure its correct…that studies very very old….and just based on measuring the blood flow to their dicks in response to porns of different types. The more interesting information…prolly going to find that in the neurosciences.
Gay men could’ve told you this
Me think thou dost protest too much
Care to tell what study you are citing?
Kenn, there is a link that leads to the actual study…
I would have to say i do agree with this because of the simple fact that every man has his curiousity and when they are around women they act like they are big and macho to impress the woman but when you catch them alone they are so nieve and want to know everything about gay sex. i have had plenty of experiences with this. just thought i would share my opinion
Haha, I knew it.
I’ve always heard “those who hate you the most do it because they hate something within themselves and take it out on you (open gay male)”
I guess this proves the statement to be correct.
This is at least 30 year old information. It’s older if you consider that Freud posited this in his original writings on projection. There are innumerable quasi-scientific studies done in the 70’s and 80’s on the subject that reach the very same conclusion. But who gives a shit about stuff from the past right?
I think they have a point because i have kids that call me fag and they are guys and my gaydar goes off and they are totally homophobs
This is so true in most cases.
I am a homosexual male, that lives in a house with 4 heteorsexual people. They all know that I am homosexual, and none of them have a problem with it. Now one of my roommates brothers is a HUGE homophobe, and you now just gave me something to use!!!! Thanks Dave.
i knew it !
How many guys were in the control group compared to the ‘homophobic’ group? What was the percentage in the control that got aroused compared to the percentage in the ‘homophobic’ group. Large age differences? This report would have been more ‘educational’ if it contained some hard (no pun intended) facts.
You know I would have to say that I agree with this because most guys that are always saying how much they hate gay guys but then again those are the same guys who at night go looking for that gay guy who will give them a blow job. I remember when I was young I used to have this friend that he was always at school saying how much he hate gay guys but then he used to come at night time to my apartment just to get blow jobs from me. So I am one to believe this article will be speaking the truth.
i think that most guys that are homophobic are afraid that they are gay or have bi thoughts and that they don’t want them to get out.
I knew this, all along. The one who throws the biggest stone, is the guilty one.
Interesting study in psychology today: subject matter….. Is homophobia associated with homosexual arousal? To take/use a word with “Phobia” in Literally, like ie; clostrophobia-“fear of being in enclosed small spaces, Theres no margin for it to ”consciously or subconsciously be taken, analysed or broken down. Now, in finding thru research, the underlying reasonings of the ‘why’, one may get to the root of or the starting point when the ‘wireing’ of the brains onset of this fear. Sex mind you is the only ONLY emotion which there is a ‘chemical change/shift to the brain. this being known as ‘fact’ i see no reason to read the article just yet, until my own reasonings in the
study of ‘[homophobia and its possible association with
sexual arousal”. Because of the way our brains are ‘wired’, the actual thought of engaging with the same sex to the point of ejaculation, the wireing has been crossed and mixed messages on considering oneself to be homo or not/ homophobia is like the barikade or wall of protection.. one that one may never admit, but it is wired there.. psych 101
Its just as I’ve always said.
I would agree with this. I’ve always thought the most homophobic guys were the ones covering for something, which is they wish they could be open and liberated like us.
This is widely known, it’s a cliche that “me thinks he objects too much”.
Isn’t homophobia a kind of anger response? If that’s so, it’s helpful to remember that anger is a secondary response, i.e. someone does or says something hurtful…and it quickly morphs into an anger response. Many times the original feeling is suppressed or ignored so the individual is not consciously aware of the original feeling…only of the anger that follows. Having feelings of emotional, sexual attraction or arousal towards someone of our same gender can cause fear: “Am I gay? Am I a fag?” Horrible things have happened to people who are candid and forthright about their sexual orientation. So, from the fear of being homosexual, the fear response is suppressed and translates to an anger response focused on the traits, behaviors, of thoughts that have evoked fear.
I believe the most effective antidote for the anger response is to understand the primary feeling or emotion that is beneath it….and to deal with the fear, hurt, sadness, disappointment, frustration, etc., that translates into anger. Addressing the primary feeling or emotion and either resolving the conflict or even sometimes just understanding what’s happening can help keep the primary response from progressing into anger.
sounds plausible. the unknown can be intoxicating to some people.the unknown has more of a lure than what is common knowledge and those who tend to mock or critcize gay and bi men are usually the one who become bottoms out of curiosity.
I have always believed that men who gay bashed and make scathing remarks concerning gays had something to hide and when I accused one man of such, he went balistic, which proved the case. I found out later his wife had confided in a friend that he was impotent at age 33??????????? Maybe impotent with her….lol
I totally agree with that…,
This is very true. Some of the most homophobic guys that I know can’t wait to get behind closed doors and have their cock in your mouth and your tongue up their ass….And the REALLY start getting friendly after that! but, their not gay!
Well i’am not suprised about this study at all. You can always make the case that those who scream the loudest against whatever they’re against tend to have a deep dark secret. Thow musent protest too much.
Yes, of course. I’m glad the study backs up what I’ve always known… Known for sure from personal experience. I don’t even differentiate between straight and gay except for the convenience of it. Men like to do it with men – most of them. Those that are afraid, are afraid of themselves, their families, societal disapproval.
I’m a psychologist and have been aware of this research for some time. It doesn’t surprise me, but it’s interesting to see it validated with a clean research design.
Wow thats crazy, I remember not too long ago me & a straight friend of mine were sleeping in the same bed (he doesnt know Im gay) & we were laying side by side & I playfully rubbed his back because he’s your typical homophobe … but his response was ” Hey cut it out , I FEEL gay ” I think homophobes are actually more afraid of the feeling of bicuriosity or the thought of being turned on by a man .. then they fear or hate gay men. Also when I was younger, a kid who Im friends with today & I used to experiment alot throughout middle school is now a huge homophobe even though we CLEARLY got each other off throughout middle school.
ha ha ha I say bullshit study!
Only in a gay mans mind is homophobia associated with gay-centered sexual arousal.
Makes sense that a straight homophobic man is aroused watching gay porn. It’s different. It’s forbidden. It’s sex. They’re men. The combination guarantees an arousal response.
While I intuitively think it’s true and have long heard about results like this, just reviewing one study isn’t nearly enough. I’d be interested in finding out about more research that’s been done on this subject.
Definitely not surprised here.
Takes one to know one.
I read the article and i agree with it. I have experienced men who say oh no i will never be with another man however i have friends that come up to me and say i accept you for the way you are and i like you. But when we are alone there are certain phrases or comments that i notice that come out there mouth that tells me otherwise. Now when i see men that are nervous about being around gays i just laugh because why would they get nervous. I personally say that everyman has had a thought or fantasy about being with another man psychology did not tell me that my experience told me that because 90% of the men i have encountered told me that they would never have sex yet all it takes is time.
Just goes to show you, everybody is a little gay.
I believe in the study results. We in the gay community already knew men who were most homophobic had a secret attraction towards other males or gay sex. Lots of people claims Freud was wrong/crazy but he is right on this one.
This study sounds wacky to me. Arousal is a biological factor that is connected to the mind but not fully controlled. Just cause you homophobic doesn’t mean you are not a nasty freak who is aroused by any sexual act…
not that the study is 100% accurate, but the results of the study is what we, the general population, have always suspected and that is that the homophobe is fearful of or hates that that he himself is.
It a true fact about the study… I would like to say that anyone who talks about being gay or have a problem with gay people they just want to experience it. I hear something about gay men at work all day and it gets on my nerve. The main one that talks about what he hates about gay men is the same one that is trying to get his dick suck or who wants to get fuck that moment. I have met so many men that are in the closet, because he is so worried about what his boys are going to say about him when they find out about him… they just want to try it to… just keep on doing what you are doing what you are doing… You are just living your life.. FUCK THE STUPID SHIT!!!
PEACE!!!
add a little alcohol and see how STRAIGHT they really are.
i had a married friend a few yrs. back who hated gays more than anything but i was so attracted to him i never gave up. finally one night not planned we happened to end up in bed togethr. as soon as i made the first move i found his dick hard as a rock. when i took it out and begin playing with it he pushed my head down on it. after sucking it for a while he went to the bathroom and crawled back into bed with his ass lubed. he backed up to me , reached for my cock and i fucked him like the bitch he was. he never mentioned what happend that night till some yrs. later he make the comment he had wondered what it would have been like to suck my dick and fuck me of course i gave him the chance to find out. he loved sucking my dick but i never got that big tool up my ass, he always shot at big load down my throat while we were 69ing. he has the kind of dick i had always dreamed of getting fucked with. about 8 very thick. it was several yrs. later i happend to meet a guy with the same size dick, i couldn’t get it all in my mouth but i loved sucking it for him. he wanted to know if i wanted to try taking it up the ass and i honsstly didn’t thing i could but after much pushing and much moaning by me he finally got allof it in me, best fucking i ever had. bigger is definatly better.
I had a friend that his brother & brother friends beat him up & raped him cause he was gay. but their not gay. ya right
When I was living in the closet, I PRETENDED to be offended, disgusted and outraged by the “homosexual adjenda”, and I used all the buzz words, I preached against gay rights, I would avoid associating with “known gays” at all costs, but secretly, I was running downtown after work, frequenting the theatres and bathhouses, everything these politicians and other highly homophobic folk are doing. I had to be the anti-gayest of all so that, if I was ever found out, nobody would believe it.
And I did get found out, in a big bad way on the front page of the local newspaper in an article about the local Game Warden, who was making the bird sanctuary safe for families by ridding the habitat of the queers who congregated there, “including a local teacher at [insert Christian School name here]”
My closetedness cost me a career that I enjoyed, a good paycheck and my self esteem. But I have managed to overcome by living my life as out and as proudly as is appropriate. I’ve learned to stop hating myself for the faggot within and to love myself for who I am. I hope these other homophobes will too.
I have always held the opinion that any person that felt that a man must make a choice to be or not to be gay, had himself been at that particular “Y” in the road.
The only decision that I made is weather or not to be in the closet – and I think that most gays are in that situation. We are gay, no decision to be made. But if we try and adapt to perceived normal life – decision making time!
Sounds stupid to me. If I get hard cause I see a woman and I’m a gay guy, the last thing I would do is get hostile. Doesn’t make sense to me
this is definitely a true study. I’ve seen it for my own damn eyes. men that get so heated and angry about gay men f*cking another man up the a** be the main ones that want to get their d*ck sucked by another man simply because for starters, and ESPECIALLY if they’re married, they ain’t getting it from their in-house b*tch. secondly, they know that not only do they want to get their d*cks by another man, they have heard other stories about what gay men will do and will go way beyond more than just suck d*ck, they will eat that a**, and whoever has had their a** ate(me..LOL), knows it feels ol’ so f*cking GREAT! so these so-called straight men, in which there aren’t any full-fledge straight men on this earth, would dibble and dabble with another man, even if it boils down to the so-call straight man asking the gay man for money just to let him suck his d*ck or eat that a** and to keep it on the hush-hush, they’ll do it. so please..NEXT!
That has long been a theory of mine, this only solidifies what i always suspected.
That’s an interesting reflection on the complexities of the human brain. So many factors come into play. The homophobe considers male-male sex, and his imagination begins to work. He seeks to suppress this with bluster to push aside his imaginings. Like the viewer at a horror movie, he is drawn to keep watching, though he knows he should look away. Then he is horrified that he wants to look. And what two responses are most primal in the species? They are fear and sexual impulse.
These impulses both cause a surge of adrenaline, dilated blood vessels in the extremities, increased pulse and respiration rates, decreased frontal lobe activity, increased parietal activity, hormonal responses in the amygdala and pituitary glands, and if the fear is of sexual response or, worse, of having it noticed, inevitably, the survival instinct kicks in: and what is more essential to species survival than genetic propagation? Tumescence (turgidity) ensues. The conflicting responses only increase tension, blood flow, and focus. And he must recognize, directly or indirectly, that the source of his stimulation is the male-male event. Either his protest will distract, or his anger will suppress–or so he thinks.
The homophobe ultimately gets relief by lashing out (which is a bit sadistic) or reaching out. The ironic points are these: hitting or hugging, hate or love, both are physical expressions of intense emotion, sourced from and directed toward the person of focus; and the leading of the attack brings approval and bonding from other similar males, and exceedingly insecure neediness for emotional connection to his own gender. How back-handedly gay is that?
At the risk of being crass, I have to say it betrays his ultimate prurient interest, which he can hide in plain sight without having to admit it. He has an excuse to be interested in, look at, point out, and dwell on, the gay man. And he can speak of all the things “they” do, with imagined embellishment, in the guise of exposing and preventing it. Then he can share the cameraderie of his buddies, reliving the moment.
Why do they call it sexual tension, after all? The gorilla has a monkey on his back: his own skin!
